I. OBJECTIVES
The learners demonstrate an understanding of how atoms combine
A. Content Standards
with other atoms by transferring or by sharing electrons.
The learners should be able to recognize different types of
compounds (ionic or covalent) based on their properties such as
B. Performance Standards
melting point, hardness, polarity and electrical and thermal
conductivity.

C. Learning Competencies/
electrical and thermal conductivity.
Objectives S9MT-llb-14
Write the LC Code for each.
a. Define what is ionic and covalent bonding
b. Compare ionic and covalent bonding
c. Illustrate how ionic and covalent is formed.
II. SUBJECT MATTER Chemical Bonding
III. LEARNING
RESOURCES
A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide pages Pages 90-94
2. Learner’s Materials pages None
3. Textbook pages 118-119
4. Additional Materials from Learning
Resource (LR) Portal
None
B. Other Learning Resources
These steps should be across the week. Spread out the activities appropriately so that students will learn well. Always be guided by
demonstration of learning by the students which you can infer from formative assessment activities. Sustain learning systematically by
IV. PROCEDURES providing students with multiple ways to learn new things, practice their learning, question their learning processes, and draw conclusion
about what they learned in relation to their life experiences and previous knowledge. Indicate the time allotment for each step.
A. Reviewing previous lesson or
presenting the new lesson  Do you still remember how to identify metals and non-
metals?
Examples:
Iron- Metal
Nitrogen- Non-Metal
Silver- Metal
B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

 The objective of the lesson will be presented.

 Present the following questions:
a. Do you know Salt Bae? (A famous Chef in his way of
pouring salt)
b. Do you know that table salt is an example of compounds?
c. Do you like to have bond with your family, friends?

C. Presenting examples/ instances of

the new lesson
 Present the lesson which is Chemical Bonding (Relate it to
the social interaction in a society.)
 Present the ionic and covalent bonding and their differences.

D. Discussing the new concepts and

practicing new skills
 Activity 1: Ionic Bonding Practice
In this activity, the class will be grouped into 4 based on their
sitting arrangement.

Directions:
In a ½ sheet of paper, find the ionic bond of each compound
and solve for the differences. Write the Lewis Structure.
Write T if it transferable and write NT if it is not transferable.
1. NaCl
2. BaO
3. MgS
4. AlO
5. CaCl

 Activity 2: Covalent Bonding Practice

In this activity, students have to solve for covalent bonding
compounds. Each pair of valence electrons indicates one bond.
Write your answers in a 1/2 sheet of paper.

Directions:
1. Get the Total Available Valence Electrons
2. Compute for the Octet Rule
3. Subtract the TAVE and Octet Rule Value
4. Use the number of bonds to create a Lewis Structure.

1. H2O
2. CO2
E. Developing mastery

 Let the students answer the following:

a. Atoms form bonds with another to become stable and

attain the electronic configuration of the noble gas
nearest it. (Relate student’s answers to family
relationship)
b. What happens when two or more substances come
together but don’t combine to make a new substance?
(Relate students’ answers to reality of life)
F. Finding practical application of
concepts and skills in daily living
 Let the students answer the question;
Will all combinations of metals and non-metals form ionic
bond?
G. Making generalization and
abstraction about the lesson
 Ask the following questions:

a. What is ionic and covalent bonding?

b. What is the difference between ionic and covalent
bonding?
c. Why do we need to bond chemicals to another chemicals?
H. Evaluating learning

Directions: Answer the following activities and write your

answers on a ½ crosswise paper.
I. Define what is ask below.
__________1. It is the bond of chemicals. (Ionic, Covalent)
__________2. It is the transfer of electrons from one chemical
to other chemicals. (Ionic, Covalent)
__________3. It is the sharing of electrons from one chemical
to other chemicals. (Valence Electrons, Chemical Bonding)
__________4. It is located at the outermost part of the shell.
(Positively Charge, Valence Electrons)
__________5. Metals will turn positively charge after it transfer
valence electrons. (Anion, Cation)

II. Compare and Contrast.

Using a
Venn Diagram
compare Ionic and
Covalent Bonding.
III. Illustrate the sharing of electrons.
A. For Ionic Bonding, write the Lewis Symbol of the selected
elements. Take note of the electronegativity value of both elements.
Subtract the electronegativity value of the metal element from the
non-metal.
1. NaCl
2. AlCl

B. For Covalent Bonding, find the total available valence electrons,

write the Octet Rule Value and the number of bonds of each
compound. Write the Lewis Structure.
1. NH3
2. H2O

I. Additional activities for application or

remediation
 What is polar and non-polar covalent?
 What is molecules?

V. REMARKS
VI. REFLECTION
A. No. of learners who earned 80% on the formative
assessment
B. No. of learners who require additional activities for
remediation
C. Did the remedial lesson work? No. of learner who
caught up with the lesson
D. No. of learner who continue to require remediation
E. Which of my teaching strategies worked well? Why did
these work?
F. What difficulties did I encounter which my principal or
supervisor can help me solve?
G. What innovation or localized materials did I use/
discover which I wish to share with other teachers?
