DECK OF CARDS

The class will be divided into four groups, each group will be given randomly pick 15
cards. In a ½ sheet of paper, list down the data. The students are given 30 seconds to
find the mean, median and mode

VI. ANALYSIS
1. How did you find the activity?
2. Were you able to recall our last discussion?

VII. ABSTRACTION
The mean, median, and mode are three metrics that are commonly used to describe

2022 International Convention for Pre-Service and In-Service Teachers – Demonstration Teaching Page 1 of 5
the center of a dataset.

The mean (commonly called the average) of a set of n numbers is the sum of all the
numbers divided by n.

The median is the middle number when the number in a set of data is arrange in
descending order. When there are even numbers of elements, the median is the mean
of two middle numbers.

The mode is the number that occurs most often in a set of data. A set of data can have
more than one mode. If all the numbers appear the same number of times, there is no
mode for the data set.

Example 1:

The data below show the score of your Grade 4 students from their previous quiz. Find
the mean, median and mode

20, 17, 16, 14,19, 14, 14, 9, 5, 13, 14, 12, 12, 10, 3, 8, 17, 11, 10, 12

1st Step: Arrange the data set from least to greatest

3, 5, 8, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 12, 12, 13, 14, 14, 14, 14, 16, 17, 17, 19, 20

2nd Step: Find the mean, in finding the mean or the average we need to add all the
data, then divide it by the total frequency or varieties

∑ X1
x = =
N
3+5+8+ 9+10+10+11+12+12+12+ 13+14+14 +14+14 +16+17+17+ 19+20
20
∑ X 1 250
x= =
N 20
∑ X1
x= = 12.5
N

3rd Step: Find the median.

Take note!

1. If the number of data points is odd, the median is the middle data point in the list.
[(N+1)/2]th
2. If the number of data points is even, the median is the average of the two middle
data points in the list. {(N/2)th + [(N/2) + 1)th]} / 2

N = 20

2022 International Convention for Pre-Service and In-Service Teachers – Demonstration Teaching Page 2 of 5
Median = {(20/2)th + [(20/2)+1] } / 2
= 10th value + 11th value
= 25/2
Median = 12.5

4th Step: Find the mode. In finding the mode or modal value it is best to arrange the
data set from least to greatest. The count how many of each number appears most
often and that is the mode.

Mode = 14

Example 2:

Your Barangay is planning to have a community-based program, and part of the project
is to help the children who couldn’t attend school because of the pandemic and their
parents cannot support their online class because of lack of financial resources. You
are a fresh graduate of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics and just currently
waiting for the LET result. After you’ve heard about the barangay project, you decided
to volunteer. During the first day of class, you have noticed that the ages of your
students are different from one another. See the table below.
AGE POPULATION

6 years old 5

7 years old 9

8 years old 10

9 years old 6

10 years old 10

11 years old 8

12 years old 4

1st Step: Arrange the data set from least to greatest

4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 10

2nd Step: Find the mean.

∑ X 1 4+ 5+6+8+ 9+10+10
x = =
N 7
∑ X 1 52
x= =
N 7
∑ X1
x= = 7.43
N
3rd Step: Find the median
4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 10
Median = [(N+1)/2]th value
Median = [(7+1)/2]th value
Median = 8/2
Median = 4th value
Median = 8

4th Step: Find the mode

4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 10

Mode: 10

VIII. APPLICATION
2022 International Convention for Pre-Service and In-Service Teachers – Demonstration Teaching Page 3 of 5
In a ½ sheet of paper answer the problem below

The barangay captain in Brgy. 19-B helps provide financial help so you can open a
small business where it can help you pay for your everyday expenses. You and some
of your neighbors decided to avail the Tulong Program as you are struggling financially
because of the pandemic. Four residents, including you, decided to sell dirty ice cream
because temperatures are still extremely hot. Because of the competition, you rate the
ice cream at your competitor's store on five features: color, taste, texture, cone, and
price. You use a scale from 1.0 for poor to 5.0 for delicious. The only decimal part you
use is 0.5. The table shows the results.

COMPETITO TASTE COLOR TOPPINGS CONE PRICE

R
1 3.5 0.5 4.0 3.5 4.5
2 4.0 4.5 4.5 4.0 2.0
3 5.0 3.0 3.5 3.6 4.0
4 0.0 3.0 2.5 3.0 3.0

Questions:

1. Find the mean, median, mode

2. To reach conclusive scores for each vendor, find the mean of the five ratings. Which
restaurants have the highest mean? Round your answers to the nearest 0.5.
3. You could also compare the medians. Which restaurant has the highest median?
4. What do you think is the better approach, comparing the means or the medians?
Explain your reasoning.
5. You consider the taste and the price to be the most important features. You add
each restaurant's ratings again, this time adding the taste and price ratings twice and
dividing by a sum of 7. If you use this system, which restaurant will have the highest
score? You may want to use a calculator.
6. Which restaurant's score will drop dramatically?
7. Which feature should you focus on if you want to compete?

mother decided to open a computer shop business even though there are already a lot
of computer shops around your area. Your mother put five computer stations. The
mean weight of five complete computer stations is 167.2 pounds. The weights of four of
the computer stations are 158.4 pounds, 162.8 pounds, 165 pounds, and 178.2 pounds
respectively. What is the weight of the fifth computer station?

X. ASSIGNMENT

Tomorrow is the fiesta in your barangay. Everyone in your community is busy preparing
food for tomorrow’s event including your mother. Your mother is boiling some water
and she asked for your help. Time to time you always check the temperature of the
water: 25°, 28°, 31°, 33°, 35°, 37°, 52°, 53°, 69°, 71°. Answer the given questions.
