Find a movie about a family or any movie which includes the interaction of family
members. Use the matrix here below to relate the characters to Piaget’s Stages of
Cognitive Development.

Title of Story/Movie: Every Child is Special (Like Stars on Earth)

Write a brief summary of the story:


This movie talks about Ishaan Awasthi, an eight-year-old boy who is currently
attending an elementary school specifically Grade 2. He is an imaginative person and
applies his imagination by painting them as talented individuals. However, he has
difficulty going to the next grade because he cannot cope with the lessons easily due
to his dyslexia. Ishaan always has a failing mark in all his subjects. He was looked
down upon by her teachers and classmates. He dislikes going to school because when
he read something the letters may seem to be dancing that making it unreadable.
Aside from that, most of the letters and numbers that he wrote were inverted. On the
other hand, Nandkishore Awasthi (Ishaan's father) sees Ishaan as an incompetent
individual who is lazy and inattentive in school. In particular, he always compared
Ishaan to his older brother Yohan Awasthi, who excels in his school and sports
aspects. That is why he is much favored by Yohan because he sees his full potential in
him and supported him through his grade school year. Furthermore, Ishaan's mother,
Maya Awasthi, quit her job so that she can take good care of her family. Due to poor
remarks, Nandkishore sent Ishaan to a boarding school. He let Ishaan be rejected by
everyone which leads him to be frustrated and get depressed. He loses interest in
everything, especially painting. Afterward, the situation was addressed when Ram
Shankar Nikumbh, a temporary art teacher of Ishaan joined the school's faculty. He
notices that Ishaan has a talent for art and shows symptoms that are related to his
illness before (dyslexia). He sees the full potential in him and believed in the kid's
capabilities. He helped him conquer his problem by understanding the situation first,
and then, teaching him how to read and write. Luckily, with the help of the remedial
techniques that were developed by dyslexia specialists, Ishaan's writing, reading, and
grades improved a lot. At the end of the movie, the father cannot express the gratitude
that he feels toward the teacher. He feels so emotional. He cried and hug the teacher
while saying thank you for what he'd done for his kid Ishaan.

Father What is the father’s stage of cognitive development?
Ishaan's father, Nandkishore Awasthi, is in the final stage of
cognitive development known as the "Formal Operational
Stage. “For example, He wants Ishaan and Yohan to excel in
school so that in the later years the two may have a brighter
future. Another thing, he sends Ishaan to a boarding school
because he believed that without the mother's attention and care
Ishaan may become an independent individual who can take
care of himself fully and can take care of his responsibilities as a
student. Another reason why he sends Ishaan to the boarding
school is that he believed that Ishaan is lazy and inattentive in
school, and he dislikes this kind of attitude.

Mother What is the mother’s stage of cognitive development?


Ishaan's mother, Maya Awasthi, is also in the final stage known
as the "Formal Operational Stage. “She can make hypothetical,
analogical, and deductive reasoning. For example, she sacrificed
her job (quit) instead of living her children behind. She fully
takes care of her responsibilities as a mother even though she
became frustrated with Ishaan's attitude in school. Aside from
that, she always defends Ishaan from his father because she
knows more about Ishaan compared to his husband, but she is
helpless in terms of the authoritative attitude towards her has to
band. Although he couldn’t recognize the symptoms of Ishaan,
she didn't give up on teaching him how to write and read.
Indeed, she is a loving mother to her children.

Ishaan's brother, Yohan Awasthi, is in the 3rdstage of cognitive

own. In fact, in the movie, he made a floating boat that is made
from his collections just like a small piece of wood, etc.
However, he doesn't excel in academic performance because no
one understands his situation. But when Nikumbh came, his art
teacher, everything becomes possible for Ishaan. Ishaan shines,
get to excel in all his subjects in school, in art, and most of all
he finds his true self and his true talent. Indeed, gone are those
days when he feels depressed and frustrated with everything
related to school.
