Activity No. 6
TWO STATION MOTOR CONTROL WITH EMERGENCY STOP
(Non- Reversing)

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the activity, the students should be able to:
1. Describe the principle of operation of a two-station motor control.
2. Connect properly the components in a two-station motor control.
3. Observe safety measures while connecting the motor control circuit.

II. TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

The operation of a Two Station Motor Control is the same as the operation of the across the line magnetic
starter except that the two start and stop push buttons are connected in parallel and series respectively with
the addition of two emergency stop push buttons.
This type of motor control connection is used to operate the motor from two different locations called, Station
1 and Station 2. Emergency stop as the word implies it is very useful during emergency situations, it will de-
energize the whole control and power circuit instantly upon pressing the mushroom head button.

IV. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
Side cutting pliers for splicing and cutting wires. In addition, we will utilize long nose pliers to provide
an extra grip and as a backup for splicing a wire. A wire stripper is also required for the easy removal of wire
insulation. A Philips screwdriver is also essential, mostly to tighten screws at each terminal where wires are
inserted. For the electrician, we will also need hand gloves to ensure his safety while performing the job. Lastly,
we'll need a multitester to see if any components of the circuit get power while the motor is running.

ELECTRICAL WORKSHOP 2
VIII. CONCLUSION:
(Discuss how two station motor control function by referring to your design diagram)

There are two types of a circuit within the "Across the line motor starter", which are the power circuit
and the control circuit. Power Circuit, this circuit is where the energy coming from the power source comes
that will help to energize the whole circuit. Next is the control circuit, this circuit is where you will control the
motor by operating the contactor on and off.

However, the control circuit of this motor starter is slightly different than the basic Direct Online
starter, it is because this DOL starter is controlled from 2 stations which composed of two starts and a stop
push button, and includes 2 latching emergency-stop button. To operate the two-station motor control first
we need the supply of electricity by switching on the disconnecting switch, the main circuit breaker, and the
control circuit breaker. Now that the control circuit is energized it will show an indication from signal lamps
that it is still in an idle condition. Next, we will do the same procedure with the Start push button from stations
1 and 2, so first we push the "Start button" from either of the station, since it is parallel connected, next since
the button is momentary it is connected to the holding contact and when it is energized, the normally open
contacts now will close. After that, the energy will now flow continuously to the contactor coil and will energize
the motor, then as the motor starts the "Run" signal lamp will light up.

Furthermore, since we have two start push buttons, it is necessary to have two series-connected stop
push buttons. So since the motor is already energized and we have already started running the motor, we can
now control it to stop the motor and it can be controlled from both stations. After stopping the motor, it will
come back from its idle state thus lighting the idle signal lamp. Additionally, once the motor trips or overheats,
the red lamp should light up since the motor circuit has a protective device called a thermal overload relay.
Lastly, if the stop pushbutton does not work or if there is an issue, we may de-energize the motor by pressing
the emergency stop button from any of the two stations because we have two emergency stop buttons
connected in series.

IX. EVALUATION:

1. Cite applications of a two-station motor control.

There are various applications for "two-station motor control," each with its own set of characteristics
such as mechanical, environmental, and industrial. So, we can apply this type of motor starter to small water
pumps, conveyor belts, fans, and compressors because our motor runs at a steady speed and has two stations
that can be operated by two individuals. The reason why we can apply two stations motor in those examples
is that the two-controller that controls the motor starter from the different station will act as an observer, and
as the observer, they will have the power to start or stop the motor just in case there is an ordered operation
happens from a different station. This can also act as a backup just in case there is a problem from a different
station, for example, as the water pump is energized the station 1 can't fully visualize what will happen as the
water flows, so in line with that statement, the Station 2 will act as a backup to that they can monitor the
energized pump if its functioning or malfunctioning.

2. Why do we connect start pushbuttons in parallel in a two - station motor control?

Since the two-start push button has normally open contacts and is momentary, then it is necessary to
connect it to a parallel connection. In addition to that, since both push-buttons are momentary it is now
connected to holding contacts or magnetic contactor coil. Going back to the topic, the two-start push button
is connected to parallel because once we push the one start button it will be energized, and will help to
maintain its power to continuously flow in one path without being interrupted by the other normally open
push button.
3. Why do we connect stop pushbuttons in series in a two - station motor control?
Based on my understanding, the function of the stop pushbutton is that when pressed, the contacts will
be separated then the current flowing through the control circuit will be cut off hence will de-energized the
motor. Since this is two-station motor control, the two stop push button must be connected to a series because
unlike the start push button, if we connect the two stop push button in parallel, the motor will not stop once
we push either of the push buttons because the contacts of the push button are N.C, therefore, there is a

continuous flow of current that can't be interrupted. However, if we connect the push button in series there
will be only one path where the current will flow, so if we push either one of them the contacts of N.C will
open and will immediately be cut off the current, hence will stop the motor from running.

4.Draw and simulate a circuit diagram of two start push button for synchronize operation with single
emergency stop and single stop push button. Discuss for what application such design of a circuit?

As we can see from the diagram, there are two start push-button for synchronizing operations; it also
includes a single stop and emergency stop push-buttons. So this kind of circuit design can be applied to an
industrial environment such as cranes and conveyor belts. Furthermore, its operation based on the example
is that the first and second start push-button is to start the first output and then the input of the process
depending on what is operated. Next, is the single stop push button which is used to stop the motor after the
operation is done. Lastly, the single emergency stop pushbutton that we can use for instance that there is an
emergency or need to stop the motor immediately.
