THE DERIVATIVES OF ALGEBRAIC
FUNCTIONS
Using the four-step rule to find the derivative of a function is time-consuming and tedious. To
simplify the lengthy process, theorems and formulas are introduced in this section. Examples
are provided to assist the reader in understanding them.

IMPLICIT DIFFERENTIATION

An explicit function is a function in which the dependent variable 𝑦 is expressed solely in terms
1 4
of the independent variable 𝑥, namely 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥); for example, 𝑦 = 2 𝑥 + 4. Whereas an
equivalent equation 2𝑦 − 𝑥 4 − 8 = 0 is said to be define a function implicitly. In this case the
derivative by the process called implicit differentiation. The process consist of differentiating
𝑑𝑦
both sides of the equation to 𝑥 by using the rules of differentiation and the solve for .

HIGHER ORDER DERIVATIVES

If 𝑓 is a differentiable function, then its derivative 𝑓’ is also a function, so 𝑓’ may have a

derivative of its own, denoted by 𝑓’ ’ = 𝑓’’. This new notation 𝑓’’ is called the second
derivative of 𝑓 because it is the derivative of the derivative of 𝑓. Look at three different ways of
writing the second derivative of a function.
