Activity No. 6
TWO STATION MOTOR CONTROL WITH EMERGENCY STOP
(Non- Reversing)

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the activity, the students should be able to:
1. Describe the principle of operation of a two-station motor control.
2. Connect properly the components in a two-station motor control.
3. Observe safety measures while connecting the motor control circuit.

II. TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

The operation of a Two Station Motor Control is the same as the operation of the across the line
magnetic starter except that the two start and stop push buttons are connected in parallel and series
respectively with the addition of two emergency stop push buttons.
This type of motor control connection is used to operate the motor from two different locations
called, Station 1 and Station 2. Emergency stop as the word implies it is very useful during emergency
situations, it will de-energize the whole control and power circuit instantly upon pressing the mushroom head
button.

IV. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

The Tools and equipment needed when doing a motor control circuit is electrical knife for peeling the wires,
the long nose pliers for the gripping of the wires and also when you don’t have electrical knife you can use the
wire stripper to peel the wire and also phillip screwdriver for the parts of motor control circuit, and to ensure
our safety use hand gloves for electrical to prevent electric shock or ground in the circuit and also for the
testing if the parts of the motor control circuit is really have a current we must have a multimeter and we can
use it also for checking if there’s still current in the motor control circuit.

V. Draw your complete Control and Power Circuit Diagram Via EKTS or SIMURELAY

Note: Simulation diagram can be print screen below

VI. PROCEDURE:
1. Present to the instructor for checking your simulated diagram.
2. Prepare tools, materials and devices needed for the activity. Check their condition using an
ohmmeter. Record continuity resistance reading on table 1 for actual activity execution.
3. Connect the circuit base on your design diagram if perform in actual.
4. Place the test probes of the ohmmeter to Line 1 and Line 2 to test the continuity of the circuit.
Observe resistance reading.
5. Press the start button for station 1 while the test probes are still at Line 1 and 2. Observe the
reading.

6. Do the same procedure for station 2 while the test probes are still at Line 1 and 2. Observe the
reading.
7. Each emergency stops per station conduct also resistance test for the whole circuit upon pressing
the mushroom head.
8. Trip the overload relay. Observe the reading also.
9. Energize the circuit only if you are totally sure of your connections are secured and correct since
no supervision of your Instructor for face to face checking, Safety First! Record your observation
in evaluation.
10. De-energize the circuit upon completion. Remove the plugs then clear the area.
11. If able to perform in actual, take pictures all conditions mentioned on number 12.
12. For simulated data, print screen all the conditions mentioned and record in the table 1 & 2.
a. IDLE condition power ON both power and control circuit.
b. START push button pressed for each station one at a time.
c. OVERLOAD TRIP condition.
d. OVERLOAD RESET condition.
e. RE-STARTED then pressed STOP push button for each station one at a time.
f. RE-STARTED then pressed EMERGENCY STOP push button for each station one at a time.

VIII. CONCLUSION:

(Discuss how two station motor control function by referring to your design diagram)
The two station motor control function is used by two people to operate it because this motor control has two
stations this type of motor can be used such as small water pumps fans and a compressor, because this is two
operated control circuit , it have two start and stop push buttons, to operate the motor and have 6 types of
indicator lamp 2 for RUN, 2 for IDlE, and 2 for TRIP, that can indicate what is the condition of the motor, and
also it has the 2 latching emergency button for emegerncy of course. To operate the two-station motor control
first we need the supply of electricity by switching on the disconnecting switch, the main circuit breaker, and
the control circuit breaker. After that the circuit now will energize and it will go for IDLE condition that tells
that the motor is ready to run , but in this case if we want to run the motor we have two stations so we have
2 start push buttons, so if we push the start push button we can push one of it so that the motor can run, and
this is also the case for the stop push button, and for the trip it is the same always, if we press the
Termaloverload it will trip the unenergized the circuit. And in this diagram we have 2 latching emergency
button because this is two station so that’s given.

IX. EVALUATION:

1. Cite applications of a two-station motor control.

This is can be used for small water pumps fans and a compressor etc. because this is two station motor control,
the operator must also the same, with two operator they can operate this two station motor control with
ease, if there’s a problem in the station 1 or 2 it can be detected by each other so we can say that they got
each other when there’s problem, specially the station 2 it can be used for backup so that they can monitor
the energized pump if its functioning or malfunctioning.

2. Why do we connect start pushbuttons in parallel in a two - station motor control?

Since the two-start push button has normally open contacts and it is momentary, then it is necessary to
connect it to a parallel connection. And also it is used for the protetction to have safely use the start and stop
buttons, and also to provide the protetction for the overloading.and it is maintaining the contatcs like the
normally open contact of the starter that connected in parallel like in the 3 wire control circuit like this and
will help to maintain its power to continuously flow in one path without being interrupted by the other
normally open push button.
.
3. Why do we connect stop pushbuttons in series in a two - station motor control?
For my observation in my diagram that I made, if we have a two stationed motor control, it is only obvious
that we have also 2 connected stop pushbuttons, because the contatcs will separated when they’re pressing
the stop push button so the current will be cut off and the motor will stop because we press the stop pusb
button. So we mush connect the 2 stop push button in series there will be only one path that current can flow
so if we press one of it, it will stop the motor from RUN Condition unlike using the parallel when we press the
stop push button the motor will not stop once we push either of the stop push buttons because the contacts
of the stop push button are N.C

IDLE CONDITON RUN CONDITION

TRIP CONDITION UN-ENERGIZED

This is designed for 1 motor control circuit that there’s only one person that can operate this control circuit
but in this case it have two start push button and it have an emergency button to prevent breaking the 3 phase
motor from breaking. Based on the diagram it must be press the 1st or 2nd start push button to start the motor
but when it comes to stopping the motor it will only one to press and that’s the Stop push button , and lastly
the emergency stop push button that we can use for instance that if there’s an emergency we can just press
it and it will un energize the whole motor circuit and stop the motor immedietly to prevent it from breaking.
