Short Description of Project

Our group would like to propose a project named AlpaSining, from the
Filipino words ‘Alpas’ meaning to break free, and ‘SIning’ meaning art. It is a
Virtual Art Gallery that can hopefully give light to what our ethnic groups,
specifically the Lumads, are currently facing in the contemporary age.

Although news regarding the Lumads have been surfacing, our group
believes that it is still a topic that is overviewed and needs to be given importance
because they, the Lumads or any other ethnic groups, are a part of our own
heritage that brings about our unique identity in the age of Globalization.

And due to the limited chance for our group to gather, we have agreed
upon creating two (2) art works individually, and one (1) collaboration work
between all members, that will then be gathered and uploaded in a Facebook
Page – which will also be created and handled by the group.

Significance and Purpose

This project relates to the Contemporary World in the sense that as our
society continues to focus on the rapid growth and going global, we are leaving
our indigenous tribes on their own and behind from all of these progressive
changes – without proper support and acknowledgement.

Through this project, our group would like to hopefully be able to tackle
about the current issues faced by the Lumads – such as the violation of their
human rights, exploitation of their lands, and their limited access to education –
with the use of what we can best do at the moment; the use of our creative
talents. Additionally, we aim to help people realize that Globalization or going
global does not always guarantee a gain for a society, but can also lead to a
cultural loss if there is no strong importance given to those who have been
upholding the societal values even before proper governance was introduced.

More than our goal to give awareness to the current situation faced by the
Lumads, this project also aims to empower local artists, specifically those who are
considered to be students or those who are yet to explore their artistic values, for
them to engage in topics and issues our own society currently faces, and for them
to produce works that best suits their current situation as well – because our group
believes that art is a powerful tool to shed light to people or issues that are mostly
overviewed or not given enough importance although we are aware of how big
of a loss they can be once vanished.

We also would like to add that the works to be posted under this project
can have their monetary value if ever there will be people interested, and that a
portion of it will be donated to an organization that helps the Lumads – although
we have yet to select one but are currently looking for one.
