ACTIVITY #1

The different computer hardware and software used in a health care setting
and their uses are:

HARDWARE;
 Computers- nurses use computers to schedule staff, for timekeeping, to order
medications or supplies, and for research and emails.
 Input devices- it provides data related to human bodily features, functions in the
form of images to medical information processing systems.
 Output devices- the interfaces that extend the results of the system processing
to other systems such as monitor and printers.
 Monitors Systems- technological devices that allow a nurse to obtain patient
information.
Fetal monitors- which can show the heart rate of a baby still in the uterus.
Heart monitors- display the electrical rhythm and pattern of a patient’s heart.
Vital sign machines- that automatically take the patient’s blood pressure, pulse
and respiration.
Blood sugar meters- to measure and display the amount of sugar in the blood.
Stents- used to treat narrowed coronary arteries that supply the heart with
oxygen-rich blood.
Sonograms machines- imaging method that uses high frequency sound waves
to produce images of structure within the body.
X-ray machines- use in medical and dental field.
 Intravenous Devices- hospital patients often have intravenous lines that are
threaded through technological devices that control the flow and sound an alarm
if the line becomes plugged. Other alarms warn the nurse if the IV bag is getting
empty. Some machines can even switch back and forth from a primary IV
solution to a separate IV antibiotic solution without human intervention.
 Body Scanners- CT and MRI scanners allow doctors to investigate what is
happening inside a patient’s body without intrusive surgery.
SOFTWARE;
 Electronic Health Record (EHR) Software
- collects information on patients (ex. The medication they take, doctor’s
recommendations, and the procedures that they have undergone in the
past)
2 popular types of EHR software:
 Electronic Patient Record (EPR)- used internally by hospitals to store and
process their patient information.
 Electronic Medical Record (EMR)- used to store data like medications types
and dosage, past and planned procedures, and data on the patient’s recovery
course.
 Medical Database Software- stores patient’s histories and treatment plans. It
helps doctors in making better treatment decisions by cross-referencing a
patient’s case with similar cases and educating themselves by reviewing clinical
cases of a given disease.
 Medical Research Software- for education and sharing research with the
medical community. It is used to train medical personnel and to support
diagnoses if no similar clinical cases among patients can be referenced
internally.
 Medical Diagnosis Software- often leverages artificial intelligence to analyze all
available patient data and generate probable diagnoses.
 Medical Imaging Software- used primarily for processing MRI, CT, PET scans
and designing 3D models.
 E-prescribing Software- lets medical professionals track, renew and cancel
prescriptions for their patients.
 Telemedicine Software- lets healthcare professionals carry out appointments
with patient online, either via a web browser or a mobile app.
 Appointment Scheduling (Booking) Software- helps hospitals, clinics and
medical practices manage their appointment systems online.
 Medical Billing Software- helps hospital accounting departments keep track of
patient invoices, payments and any other financial operations.
 Hospital Management Software- assists hospital administration in day-to-day
operations. It also helps with automation of accounting, medical billing, claims,
outpatient management, inventory, bed management and others.
 Medical Equipment Management Software- to relieve hospital and medical
practices of manual stocktaking and equipment maintenance.
 Personal Health Record Software (Medical Diaries)- it can support the patient
towards recovery or alert medical staff on the worsening condition of a patient as
soon as the first symptoms appear.
