Reflection

The final assignment for this course, English Composition II, was to create an ePortfolio

to professionally present ourselves to a targeted audience. Therefore, I choose to take my

portfolio in a professional direction. This choice was the starting point that set me in the

direction of choosing the theme for this assignment based off my professional background. My

professional background is in the engineering field, Mechanical Engineering. For that reason, my

portfolio is based around my experience of becoming a Mechanical Engineer. To accomplish this

assignment, I included past assignments that were required for the completion of my degree. This

includes assignments from classes such as English Composition and Philosophy. Firthermore, I

also included assignments from the previous internship I had the chance to work for during the

summer of 2022. During this semester-long course I learned many new writing devices such as a

rhetorical analysis and film reviews. I also learned some new skills that will help me in my

engineering career. I was taught new technological skills such as creating my own personal

website and how to record a video of myself using a webcam. These skills can be used to further

my career because I can use new ways of reaching out to potential employers. This also conveys

the extent of my skills and may make myself a more beneficial candidate for future positions.

Additionally, because of this the targeted audience for this assignment is future

employers. This is because I want to introduce myself to employers so that they will think of me

for a future position at the company. Even if I am not offered a position as a result; it would still

get my name out to other companies. In the end it will ultimately benefit my engineering career.

Furthermore, this portfolio does not have just one intended audience. The targeted audience also

includes future mechanical engineers who are wanting to know more about the career. They are

part of the targeted audience because the portfolio will serve as evidence showing the steps

involved in becoming an engineer. I explain what projects I was required to complete for my

required university courses. I included these assignments to convey the skills that will be

required of them once they begin college. This is beneficial to the audience because it allows the

audience to see the required skills before they are required to use them. This allows them to

know the skills and then hone them to prepare them for the struggles of what is known as

college. Additionally, I included an assignment from my past engineering internship. This

assignment was a summarization of everything I was tasked with completing while employed.

For this reason, I made sure that I included this document into my portfolio. The document gives

the audience a chance to observe the skills required of an engineer working at an engineering

company. These skills are but not limited to the use of power tools, Microsoft Excel, and

Autodesk Inventor. Including this information will provide the audience with the necessary skills

required for a career in engineering. This information will provide future engineer with

information they can use now to be prepared for their future. To make sure that the targeted

audience can view my portfolio I have to circulate it through the proper channels. The channels I

believe will help to circulate the portfolio are LinkedIn, career sites such as Indeed, and on social

media.

Finally, after completing this assignment I was reminded of all the skills as a writer I

learned to use in order to complete the portfolio. This led me to think about what I learned about

myself as a writer after finishing this course. I learned that I need to stop waiting till the last

minute to complete writing assignments. This is because the quality of the piece will not be as

good compered to if the assignment had been completed days in advance of its due date. This

means if I took initiative in writing assignments before they are due, I could slightly increase the

quality of my writing. This was shown to me by the academic writing included in this course.

This is because academic writing requires more skills and knowledge compered to any other

pieces. This is true because academic writing requires much time researching a topic and even

more time planning the piece. Due to these reasons academic writing is precise and meticulous

making it a very difficult assignment. This showed me that I can not slack off when it comes to

academic writing, or it will be impossible to complete my assignments. Therefore, I need to take

the extra time to plan out my writing to start the assignment early aiding in the quality of my

writing skills.
