39 students sent to hospital for food poisoning

39 West Allis students have been hospitalized to be treated for food poisoning. Beverly Knocks,

a student cafeteria worker, suggests that the cause of the poisoning may be a chicken salad that

students were given at lunch yesterday. Dr. Robert R. Reid, the president of West Allis, says that

lab tests are being conducted on samples of yesterday’s food.

Reporters to receive award

Jennifer Rambler and Tommy Horton will receive the Illinois Press Association award for

outstanding contributions to journalism. The two journalists uncovered a five-million-dollar a

year daycare center fraud last fall. The reporters also have been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Skyhawks give away free tickets for last game

This Sunday, the Skyhawks will host their last football game of the season against Tennessee

Tech. Students who want to see the game can receive a free ticket in the University Center

Lobby on Friday from 10 to 1.

Tickets will be given away on a first come first served basis.

Recreation closings

With the harsh winter weather and ice storm warnings causing the UTM campus to make the

switch to all virtual classes this week, all campus recreation facilities will be closed on Thursday,

February 11th. The Division of Student Affairs has said that they will provide an update if the
Student Recreation Center will be open on Friday. The pool will remain closed and will reopen

on Monday, February 15th.

City council raises budget

City council has passed next year’s budget, which will exceed 25 million dollars for the first

time. It will require a tax increase of 30 cents per 100 dollars of assessed property valuation,

meaning that the owner of a 100 thousand dollar home will pay an extra 300 dollars per year in

taxes.

UTM Kickboxing Class

Students looking for a fun way to burn some calories and improve their stamina this week have

the option to participate in a free MYZONE Kickboxing class this Thursday. The class will be

held in the Student Recreation Center, with one session starting at 5:30 and another at 6:30.

MYZONE heart rate monitors are not required to attend, but can be checked out from the

Recreation Center front desk.

Vanguard Theatre to perform free play

The University of Tennessee at Martin’s Vanguard Theatre will be performing “Oedipus Rex”

on March the 11th through the 13th at 7 p.m. and again on March 14th at 3 p.m. The play will

take place in the Harriet Fulton Theatre located in the Fine Arts Building. The theatre will not be

charging admission for this play, so anyone interested in some classical Greek entertainment can

come and watch for free! Due to Covid-19 restrictions, seating is limited to only 50 people per
showing, and tickets must be reserved in advance by calling the Department of Visual and

Theatre Arts at 731-881-7400.

Health care facilities will open doors to visitors.

New rules are being set in place that will reunite many families with their loved ones. Family

visitations will now be allowed at some long-term care facilities for the first time since the

Covid-19 pandemic forced them to turn away visitors in March. Visitations will only be

permitted in facilities that have had no new Covid-19 cases in at least 2 weeks, and visitors will

be required to wear facemasks.

Hot Chocolate 5k

The ladies of Alpha Omicron Pi will host a hot chocolate 5k on Saturday, February 27th. The

event will be held virtually from 8am to 11am. All proceeds will be donated to the Arthritis

Foundation. Students who are interested can contact any AOII or check Runway for registration.
