Developing personal SMART goals for your chosen Sustainable Development Goals

Context
In the beginning of this topic, we discussed renewable and non-renewable resources. We worked
in groups to break down the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations
Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). These were:
Goal 6 - Clean Water
Goal 12 - Responsible consumption and production
Goal 13 - Climate Action
Goal 14 - Life Below Water
Goal 15 - Life on Land

These goals are quite large, far-reaching and long-term. They can be hard to think about on a large
scale as the big picture. It is important to keep in mind that big changes come from little changes
and your choices do matter.
Task
In this task, you will take a step back from these large goals and focus on small things you can do
every day to make a difference.

You need to develop three SMART Goals based on the SDGs. Choose one of the goals listed above,
choose one or more of the targets for the goal and then develop your SMART goals.

UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals:

Smart goal 1: I will recycle, reuse, and clean all my used hard plastic by the end of the term
SDG: Increase recycling and reuse of waste
Specific I will be recycling the plastic by putting it in my recycle bin, I will reuse my hard
plastics such as bottles or takeaway containers and when I recycle my plastic, I will
clean it before I put it in the bin.
Measurable It is measurable by making sure I recycle, reuse, and clean 100% of my recyclable
plastics.
Attainable It is attainable because it is something that I can easily do, I need to recycle, reuse,
and clean my plastics.
Relevant It is relevant because I am making an effort to decrease my amount of waste by
recycling and reusing my plastics.
Time- It is time bound because I will recycle until the end of the term, which is in roughly 3
bound weeks.

Smart goal 2: I will eat everything in my lunchbox for recess and lunch every day until the end of
term 4
SDG: Reduce food waste
Specific My goal is specific because I will eat everything in my lunchbox during recess and
lunch every day until the end of term 4.
Measurable It is measurable because I will eat everything I pack into my lunchbox.
Attainable It is attainable because I already eat the food that I pack into my lunchbox every
day.
Relevant It is relevant because if I eat everything that I pack into my lunchbox, then I will
reduce the amount of food waste that I create.
Time- It is time bound because I will be completing this goal until the end of term 4, which
bound is in roughly 3 weeks.

Smart goal 3: I will eat seasonal and efficient fruit and vegetables (tomatoes, onions, and lettuce) in
my dinner 3 nights a week by the end of term 4.
SDG: Efficient use of natural resources
Specific I will be eating seasonal and efficient fruit and vegetables (tomatoes, onions, and
lettuce) for 3 nights a week in my dinner.
Measurable I must eat these specific fruits and vegetables for 3 nights a week: Tomatoes,
onions, and lettuce.
Attainable It is attainable because all I need to do is incorporate these fruit and vegetables in
my dinner 3 times a week.
Relevant It is relevant because fruit and vegetables are a natural source and if they are
seasonal, they are efficient and yield the most produce rather than trying to force
the crop to grow in another season.
Time- I must eat these fruits and vegetables for 3 nights a week by the end of term 4,
bound which is in roughly 3 weeks.
