Developing personal SMART goals for your chosen Sustainable Development Goals

Context
In the beginning of this topic, we discussed renewable and non-renewable resources. We worked
in groups to break down the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations
Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). These were:
Goal 6 - Clean Water
Goal 12 - Responsible consumption and production
Goal 13 - Climate Action
Goal 14 - Life Below Water
Goal 15 - Life on Land

These goals are quite large, far-reaching and long-term. They can be hard to think about on a large
scale as the big picture. It is important to keep in mind that big changes come from little changes
and your choices do matter.
Task
In this task, you will take a step back from these large goals and focus on small things you can do
every day to make a difference.

You need to develop three SMART Goals based on the SDGs. Choose one of the goals listed above,
choose one or more of the targets for the goal and then develop your SMART goals.

Smart goal 1: By the end of the term, I will give all (100%) my household’s food scraps to my
neighbours’ chickens.
SDG: Increase recycling and reduce of waste
Specific I will give all the food waste to feed chickens instead of throwing it in the bin
which will reduce food waste.
Measurable My goal is measurable because I will reduce all of the food scraps and the chickens
will be fed all of them by the end of the term.
Attainable This is achievable because we fill our green bin a lot and we waste quite a bit of
food instead of eating it. I will reduce 100% of my food waste.
Relevant This is relevant because I will be reducing food waste in my home. Also, I won’t be
wasting food, now it will feed chickens.
Time-bound I will achieve this goal by the end of the term.

Smart goal 2: By the end of the term, I will put all my plastic rubbish in the bin and the correct one
SDG: Reduce marine pollution
Specific I will put all of my plastic rubbish in the dedicated bin without leaving it to float into
the sea.
Measurable My goal is measurable because I will be throwing out all of my plastic rubbish. I will
know when this goal has been achieved when there’s no plastic rubbish that’s mine.
Attainable This goal is possible because I do open packaging which creates plastic rubbish
which I don’t always put in the bin. Also, I have all of the right bins at home.
Relevant My goal is relevant because of instead of letting the rubbish float into the ocean I
will put it in the bin. This will reduce marine pollution.
Time- I will achieve this goal by the end of the term.

Smart goal 3: By the end of the term, I will walk to my tennis practice instead of driving.
SDG: Reduce chemicals and waste released into air, water, and soil
Specific I will walk to my tennis practice instead of emitting carbon dioxide by driving.
Measurable This goal will be measurable because I’ll walk every Tuesday. I know I’ll achieve it
when tennis is finished and I’ve walked to tennis every Tuesday.
Attainable My goal is possible because my tennis is on every Tuesday evening. Also, my tennis
practice is walking distance from my house.
Relevant My goal is relevant because I won’t be emitting chemicals into the air as much as I
regularly would by driving to tennis on Tuesdays.
Time- This will be achieved by the end of the term.
