Developing personal SMART goals for your chosen Sustainable Development Goals

Context
In the beginning of this topic, we discussed renewable and non-renewable resources. We worked
in groups to break down the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations
Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). These were:
Goal 6 - Clean Water
Goal 12 - Responsible consumption and production
Goal 13 - Climate Action
Goal 14 - Life Below Water
Goal 15 - Life on Land

These goals are quite large, far-reaching and long-term. They can be hard to think about on a large
scale as the big picture. It is important to keep in mind that big changes come from little changes
and your choices do matter.
Task
In this task, you will take a step back from these large goals and focus on small things you can do
every day to make a difference.

You need to develop three SMART Goals based on the SDGs. Choose one of the goals listed above,
choose one or more of the targets for the goal and then develop your SMART goals.

UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals:

Smart goal 1: By the end of the term I will recycle 30% of the things that I can not use anymore.

SDG: (Increase recycling and reuse of waste)

Specific This goal is specific as it will make a change to the SDG

Measurable To measure my goal I will create a chart to keep track of what is happening daily.
The chart will include what bin I put my stuff in and the quantity of stuff in each bin.
For example, I might put 2 things in landfill and five in the recycling.
Attainable This goal is very attainable. I do not have to change much, but just keep in mind to
recycle when I can.
Relevant This goal is relevant to the SDG as what it does contributes to the goal which is
increase recycling and reuse waste. The goal is making a change to what is trying to
be achieved.
Time- The goal can be achieved within the timeframe as it is a habit that should not take
bound to get down. Especially, with a chart I can remember what I am doing and get the
30% more recycling with the things that I would have put into landfill.

Smart goal 2: I will eat 90% of the food I get daily

SDG: (Reduce food waste)

Specific This goal is specific as I it affects me
Measurable To measure this goal, a table could be created with what I am eating or have eaten.
I will than put if I ate it and do this daily. At the end of the week I can get the
percentages of how much food I ate out of the food that I had.
Attainable The goal is attainable as I am already close to the goal and if I change a bit more, I
can reach it.
Relevant The goal is relevant as it links directly. The SDG is reduce food waste and my goal is
to straight up reduce how much food I waste.
Time- The goal can be achieved with the 3 week timeframe, as it is not unreachable and is
bound attainable.

Smart goal 3: Over the next 3 weeks I will use both sides of paper every time I use it
SDG: (Reducing clearing of forests)
Specific This goal is specific as I always use one side of the paper and than throw it out or
just leave it and never come back to it again.
Measurable To measure this I will count how many pieces of paper I use and list if I used both
sides of the paper or not.
Attainable The goal is attainable as I just need to turn the paper over and keep it. It isn’t that
hard to do.
Relevant This goal is relevant to the SDG as saving paper reduces the amount of trees that
need to get cut for paper.
Time- This goal is timebound by the end of the term and is a good amount of time to get
bound the habit down pack.
