Developing personal SMART goals for your chosen Sustainable Development Goals

Context
In the beginning of this topic, we discussed renewable and non-renewable resources. We worked
in groups to break down the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations
Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). These were:
Goal 6 - Clean Water
Goal 12 - Responsible consumption and production
Goal 13 - Climate Action
Goal 14 - Life Below Water
Goal 15 - Life on Land

These goals are quite large, far-reaching and long-term. They can be hard to think about on a large
scale as the big picture. It is important to keep in mind that big changes come from little changes
and your choices do matter.
Task
In this task, you will take a step back from these large goals and focus on small things you can do
every day to make a difference.

You need to develop three SMART Goals based on the SDGs. Choose one of the goals listed above,
choose one or more of the targets for the goal and then develop your SMART goals.

Smart goal 1: By the end of the term, I will reuse 100% of plastic bags I get from shops.
SDG: 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)
Specific This goal is specific because it targets plastic bags and how much I can reuse instead
of putting straight into landfill.
Measurable My goal is measurable because I can count how many plastic bags I reuse each day.
Attainable My goal is attainable because I haven’t gone from 0% to 100%, I have gone from
using 75% of plastic bags to aiming for 100%.
Relevant This goal is relevant to the STG because its taking responsibility to act up on landfill.
Time- I am aiming to finish my goal in 2 and a half weeks.

Smart goal 2: By the end of the year, I want to efficiently use paper in classes instead of putting it in
the bin.
SDG: 12
Specific This goal is specific because it’s about not putting paper in the bin, instead reusing it
by using it as scrap paper.
Measurable My goal is measurable because I can remember how much paper I put straight into
the bin.
Attainable My goal is attainable because its about using paper efficiently instead of not putting
paper in the bin at all.
Relevant This goal is relevant because will be reusing the paper that still has blank space on
it. This paper can be reused in wrapping paper, drawing paper or even taking notes.
Time- This goal is time bound by 3 weeks, it is an appropriate time because it will allow
bound habits to change.

Smart goal 3: By the end of the term, I will eat my left overs after dinner.
SDG: 12
Specific This goal is specific because its about eating left overs instead of making another
meal.
Measurable This goal is measurable because I will eat my left overs whenever its available.
Attainable My goal is attainable because it aims to achieve left overs at dinner instead of all
meals.
Relevant My goal is relevant because I will be eating my left overs instead of putting it in the
bin.
Time- This goal is time bound by the end of the term. This is an appropriate time to get
bound enough left overs.
