Synopsis

1. Our team has decided to focus our project on the issue of environmentalism, and

specifically how to educate citizens, more specifically our youth, to reduce waste

in the United States.

Perhaps many of us have not realized but our world population has been

increasing exponentially for quite some time now, in addition to this, an even bigger

problem presents itself in allocating the limited resources we currently have. One

potential solution is reducing waste, that being food or other recyclable materials.

It might seem nonsensical to some but having younger generations participate in

recycling practices makes them more likely to continue this over their lifespan. In

addition to that, their parents become involved, and when they reach maturity,

sustainability will be present in everything they do. We decided to focus our efforts on

sustainable practices.

2. Our group has decided to be a large non-profit organization that would possibly

team up with bigger corporations such as Waste Management to help fund our

project.

Growing up in Lima, Peru I (Jean) constantly faced a situation where we didn’t

have food on our table, so we had to eat whatever was available at the moment and

nothing could be wasted – this is something we see in many countries of South America

and across the globe. Incredibly enough I remember that many people made recycling

part of their living as they did not have a job, transforming the problem into a solution.

Some will take all the recycled materials in our neighborhood and other communities

around and sell them to recycling factories. In a sense, I grew attached to the idea of

helping others.
3. The name of our organization is BetterGreen.

4. Our organization plans to help the cause by drawing attention to the issues the

world, and the United States specifically, is facing with the amount of waste being

produced. We also plan on educating citizens and children on how to help our

environment and reduce waste. The goal is for better choices to be implemented

in the youth to the point it carries on for generations and promotes real change

that benefits everyone. This can be implemented through social media and school

programs which makes sustainability fun for kids and not similar to a chore.

In order to establish these principles early and turn them into lifelong habits, it is

important to begin talking to children about sustainability in elementary school. This

suggests that everyone must participate. Teachers and other school officials should set

an example for their students. Sustainability needs to be practiced as well as taught,

whether it's through trash cleanup campaigns, bike-to-work campaigns, solar panel

installations, or packing your lunch in environmentally friendly containers.

5. Our public campaign is to promote the recycling of cans in households by

implementing a program in schools where kids can bring the ‘pull tab’ from the

top of the soda cans to their schools in a similar fashion to the “Box Top”

campaign or the ‘book it’ program where kids are encouraged to read, and when

they do, they get a free personal pizza, which gets the parent's attention too.

We can go from having to recycle to wanting to recycle. This brings a fun aspect

to recycling and enables children to influence their families to have more of a green

thumb. We think that children are the key to being able to make a true change in the

world because they can be educated on small things they can do to have a big impact on

the world. Children also can influence their families into living a bit more
environmentally conscious. In addition to changing our lifestyles to protect the

environment, it's critical that as parents we start teaching our kids about sustainability

at a young age. As we educate about sustainability, we are learning about more than just

the planet around us.
