PCA-Structural Frame Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the structural frame
2. Apply the structural frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

My role in the organization was as an intern. I was primarily a commercial real estate
intern that rotated throught the different sections of the real estate process such as project
management, assest management, acquisitions, and financing. The situation I am
describing is when the organization was remodling one of its older storage
sites in Utah. The goal was to make the facility and units more accessible, add more
units, remodel the units to make them air conditioned, and to build a three storied
bulidning that can be seen from the freeway. The problem was during construction we
had a materials shortage that hindered progress.

2) Describe how the structure of the organization influenced the situation.

The structure of an organization impacted our ability to manage and mitigate the impact
of a materials shortage on its stakeholders. An organization's structure can have a big
impact on how it handles a resources scarcity because the structure dictates how
employees in an organization respond and work. We had an effective organizational
structure that was able to handle a shortage, reduce its effects on stakeholders and
operations, and come up with innovative solutions to the problems it poses. Our leaders
developed and implemented structures that enable continued success and resilience in the
face of change and uncertainty.

3) Recommend how you would use structure for an alternative course of action
regarding your case.

There are several ways in which a well designed and efficient structure can help to
mitigate the impact of the shortage and find alternative solutions. I would Review and
adjust supply chain management systems. With this we may consider diversifying our
suppliers or increasing the inventory levels to buffer against potential shortages. I would

also develop contingency plans for situations like this. This can help us develop
contingency plans that outline alternative courses of action in the event of a materials
shortage. These plans may include sourcing materials from alternative suppliers or
identifying alternative materials that can be used in place of the original materials.

By using structure in these ways, we can mitigate the impact of a materials shortage and
find alternative solutions to keep operations running smoothly. By anticipating potential
challenges and implementing proactive measures, the organization can build resilience
and ensure ongoing success in the face of change and uncertainty.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

I think what I would do differently in this situation would be to make sure that attempts to solve
the shortage are well planned and carried out, I would think about employing a project
management strategy. This would entail segmenting the work into more manageable jobs, giving
each one specific responsibilities, and setting deadlines for completion. This strategy would
make it easier to make sure that everyone is striving for the same outcome and that advancement
is being accomplished.

In order to improve communication and collaboration between various departments or business

units inside the corporation, I would also take into account developing cross-functional teams.
By doing this, you can make sure that everyone is collaborating to address the shortfall and
identify other alternatives.
