service are considered to be key areas and efforts differentiating the product and service
range on offer from REISCO vis-a-vis it’s competitors. We endeavour to continuously
improve our service delivery channels whilst being concerned to update the production
technology of products available for projects and related standards to uphold
maintenance.
Besides the technically qualified and experienced staff, local partners play a distinctive
role in actively promoting trade operations of REISCO in Qatar.
REISCO plans to branch out and expand it’s market base. Prospect markets in Kuwait
and Oman has attracted REISCO’s specific attention. Client is presently in the process of
entertaining negotiations to venture into the prospect markets with independent profit and
cost centers.
REISCO also contemplates to outsource the supply and installation of their specialized
product range to select subcontractors. They however opt to retain an alternate strategy to
entertain Client orders via direct supplies from main contractor or by RIESCO itself. This
option would require REISCO to initiate their own and independent maintenance unit to
upkeep with the quality of services on offer and improve related business activities with
minimal disruptions. On an overall they expect to streamline related business processes
with the supply department via established active links.

INTRODUCTION:
This manual describes recommended methods of handling and storage and safety of JASH equipment at site
before installation.
During manufacture and assembly, great care is taken to ensure (joints) flatness of mating seat facings on the
gate frame and shutter in gate fully closed position. Unless the gate is carefully installed free from distortion,
maintaining (joints) flatness of mating seat facings on the gate frame and shutter as ensured at factory, the
gate will leak excessively.
JASH equipment are custom made equipment, comprising of many parts, components and accessories viz.
Gate assembly: comprising of frame, shutter, logs, lifting beam, side and top - bottom wedges etc, Wall
thimble and Lifting mechanism: comprising of operating headstock, lifting rod/spindle/stem, coupling, stem
guide bracket, etc. Being custom equipment made to order on an individual basis, complete inter-changeability
of all parts is not possible and hence replacements and fitments, if necessary involve substantial time and
delays. It is, therefore, essential that the equipment is carefully handled during transit, unloading, storage and
installation to avoid damage and it should be ensured that no pilferage of components take place. All
components are tagged to identify their respective gate/log as per the gate tag number / serial number etc.
inspected and certified complete at our factory before packing and shipment.
This manual furnishes information and procedures only as a recommendation for the proper handling, storage,
of JASH equipment. Technical details, data and sketches given in this manual are of a general nature and may
vary from the exact equipment supplied due to project specific requirements or due to the constant learning
and upgrading. JASH endeavor’s to be the leader in our field and tries to keep our products and designs the
best available.
JASH assumes no liability expressed or implied for the interpretation of this instruction manual or the faulty
handling, storage, installation or commissioning of the gates supplied. Responsibility of JASH is restricted to
manufacturing defects only and does not extend to improper installation, adjustments and related problems
subsequent to manufacturing.
While taking delivery from the Carriers, before unloading packing cases / material from the vehicle, check
the packing cases for apparent damage from outside during transit. Also check unpacked or partially packed
items, if any, for damage or pilferage during transit. In case of any damage or shortage, obtain carrier’s
certificate at the time of taking delivery and report to the Manufacturer and the Insurer immediately.
Before commencement of unloading verify the weight of the packing cases / material for proper selection of
lifting equipment. This can be done by checking the weight of packing cases / material from the packing list.
In case this information is not available or in case there is any confusion on this matter then contact!
Manufacturer immediately, to know the weight or to clarify the doubts.
The lifting capacity of slings, chains, tackles, hoist, crane etc to be used for unloading and subsequent handling
should be atleast 50% more than the weight of the heaviest packing case / material to be handled, and
remember any excessive out-reach could cause dangerous problems.
Before commencement of unloading also ensure that a leveled, firm and compacted elevated platform
approximately 300 mm (12”) higher than the surrounding area {refer figure ( b )} is ready for keeping
unloaded packing cases / material. The floor area of this platform should be 2 times the floor area of all the
packing cases / material to be unloaded.
Always sling the cases and heavier parts while unloading. Do not drop the cases and the parts on floor from a
height. Do not lift/lower any case containing gate assembly on to its sides and do not put it upside down. Refer
to instructions shown on the packing case showing where the slings should be used, which side the material
is up and how to store the boxes. Refer figure (a) above to understand how to handle packing cases. DO NOT
WALK UNDER RAISED PACKING CRATES!
Open the cases immediately on unloading / receipt and check for any damage or pilferage during
transportation. Take care to see that no parts are damaged while opening the cases. Check the consignment
according to packing list enclosed. Report any shortages or complaints to the Manufacturer and the Insurer
immediately.
The Gate should be carefully handled with proper lifting tackles and slings to avoid injury to persons, breakage
and damage to the gate assembly and its components and other parts and accessories. During storage the
equipment should be placed on wooden planks (not spaced more than 600 mm (24”) over an even compacted
surface so as to keep them off the ground and prevent bending and distortion. Refer figure (b) above.
Ferrous contamination, if any, taking place in our plant during manufacturing is eliminated by pickling and
passivation of all stainless steel items before packing and dispatch. To avoid ferrous contamination of stainless
steel components at site please ensure that no stainless steel items come in direct contact with chains and
handling accessories made of carbon steel, as this results into ferrous pickup / contamination and subsequent
corrosion on stainless steel items in places which have come in contact with carbon steel. JASH will not be
held responsible for ferrous contamination of stainless steel items taking place at site due to handling and
storage in improper manner.
Stacking of large and heavy gates should be avoided as far as possible. If gates are sent stacked from the
factory then no further material should be stored over this stack after unloading. In case where storage space
is limited for the number of gates involved and if stacking is badly necessary it should be limited to only four
gates and heavy wooden planks of even thickness should be placed in between the gates to prevent damage
to the stacked gates. If gates are sent stacked from the factory then no further material should be kept
over this stack after unloading.
Gate assembly, lifting rod and lifting mechanisms have precisely machined and finished surfaces and hence
should be protected from damage during handling as well as storage.
Main gate assembly comprises of gate frame fitted with shutter in its guides. This assembly is factory
assembled and tested and hence should not be dismantled or disturbed. The shutter is locked in position
at its top with the help of lock plates / transit stop (painted red) bolted to the frame. These lock plates prevent
the vertical movement of shutter in the frame. Lock plates / transit stop should not be removed until the gate
is installed and is to be initially operated. Refer figure ( c ) above to understand location of transit stop / lock
plate.
Shutter should never be taken out from the frame during handling, storage or installation. Adjustment of
wedge block bolts, when provided should not be disturbed. Care should be taken to avoid damage to the
wedges and wedge adjustment bolts while slinging and handling.
Utmost care should be taken to avoid bending of lifting rods (spindle) while handling. The threaded portion
of a spindle is applied with grease and is wrapped with thin polyethylene sheet and Hessian cloth wrapped
and tied over it. The threads should be checked for any damage during transit. They should remain greased
and should be kept wrapped up as described above until the spindle is needed for installation.
The spindle of self-contained / closed top frame gates {refer figure (m) to understand what is a self-contained
/ closed top frame gate} are sent assembled on to the gate assembly.
Spindles of gates which are not self-contained type / open top frame gates {refer figure ( o ) to understand
what is a non self- contained / open top frame gate} are sent separately. Whether a gate is self-contained /
closed top frame or not self-contained / open top frame can be verified from the respective approved GA
drawing.
Ample care should be taken to protect the threading on lifting rods for the ends to be connected with
couplings, if any.
Rod coupling, when supplied are threaded and pinned on the end of lifting rod and are ready to be fitted
with the threaded end of other rod to be coupled. Ensure that the pins on couplings do not get loosened
and lost.
Stop Nut is kept threaded on to the spindle threads and is kept fixed with a set screw. Ensure that it does
not get loosened and lost.
Spindles or lifting rods should be supported over their entire length with a view to prevent bending. They
should be carefully stored on even surfaces off the ground and in a clean and dry area.
During storage care should be taken to cover the equipment to protect seat facings, seals and other machined
surfaces from scratches, dents, rusting etc. and from other foreign matter. The cover should be of material,
which is resistant to water and should cover the entire case from top to bottom.
Packing cases containing operating mechanism (manual operating headstocks / electric actuators / pneumatic
actuators etc) and small parts and anchor bolts / fasteners should be preferably kept in store room to prevent
damage from environmental causes like dirt, dust, sunlight and rain and also with a view to prevent chances
of pilferage.
In case of any doubt pertaining to handling/storage of supplied material refer to the manufacturer.
WARNING:
Follow appropriate safety measures/laws and working conditions as applicable for your project or as
applicable in your Country while unloading, handling, installation and commissioning of this
equipment. Take due care to avoid ferrous contamination on stainless steel items while handling,
storage and installation of supplied products.
JASH assumes no liability for accidents or damages taking place during the process of handling,
storage, installation or commissioning of the gates supplied.

from the packing list. In case this information is not available or in case there is any confusion on
this matter then contact! the manufacturer immediately to know the weight or to clarify the doubts.
The lifting capacity of slings, chains, tackles, hoist, crane etc. to be used for unloading and
subsequent handling should be atleast 50% more than the weight of the heaviest packing case /
material to be handled, and remember any excessive out-reach could cause dangerous problems.
-2-
Before commencement of unloading also ensure that a leveled, firm and compacted elevated
platform approximately 300 mm (12”) higher than the surrounding area {refer figure ( b )} is ready
for keeping unloaded packing cases / material. The floor area of this platform should be 2 times the
floor area of all the packing cases / material to be unloaded.

transportation. Take care to see that no parts are damaged while opening the cases. Check the
consignment according to packing list enclosed. Report any shortages; or complaints to the
Manufacturer and the Insurer immediately.
The Stoplog should be carefully handled with proper lifting tackle and slings to avoid injury to
persons, breakage and or damage to the stop log assembly and its components and other parts and
accessories. During storage the equipment should be placed on wooden planks (not spaced more
than 600 mm (24”) apart) over an even compacted surface so as to keep them off the ground and
prevent bending and distortion. Refer figure ( b ) above.
Ferrous contamination, if any, taking place in our factory during manufacturing is eliminated by
pickling and passivation of all stainless steel items before packing and dispatch. To avoid ferrous
contamination of stainless steel components at site please ensure that no stainless steel items come in
direct contact with chains and handling accessories made of carbon steel as this results into ferrous
pickup / contamination and subsequent corrosion on stainless steel items in places which have come
in contact with carbon steel. Jash will not be held responsible for ferrous contamination of stainless
steel items taking place at site due to handling and storage in an improper manner.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR STOPLOG FRAMES
Verify from the manufacturers drawing whether the stop log frame assembly is multi-piece bolted
construction or single piece welded construction. Multi-piece bolted construction is provided when
the length of frame is longer or when the width of stoplog is more than 2200 mm (86”) or when the
stoplog frame is to be air freighted for urgent delivery.
If the stoplog frame assembly is multi-piece construction then the two vertical side members would
be in multi-piece bolted construction and are delivered to be bolted to the bottom sill member.
If the stoplog frame assembly is a single piece construction then the two vertical side members
would be in single piece and are delivered welded / bolted to the bottom sill member.
Based on whether the stop log frame is in multi-piece construction or single piece construction
minor changes in installation procedure has to be carried out as detailed herein under.
Before commencement of installation, check the site civil conditions for correctness of all
dimensions as shown in the GA Drawing / Civil Block out drawing furnished by JASH for the
stoplog being installed. Specially check whether the invert level of stoplog opening and invert of
platform is as per drawing, check whether the size of the opening for wall mounting stoplog or
whether the groove provided in parallel side walls or distance between the parallel walls and groove
provided in bottom for flush bottom stoplog is of the correct size and depth.
Also specifically check whether enough gap is available between civil structure and lifting pin of
stoplog to enable interference free movement of the stoplogs and lifting arrangement after
installation. Check for the sufficient head room space to be available above the installation area at
the site for proper handling and movement of the frames.
Proceed only if all the dimensions are CORRECT or else first rectify the civil mistakes so that there
are no subsequent problems.
1. Before the stoplog is taken up for installation, check for the correctness of civil works. Check
that the grooves / recesses as shown in the GA drawing are made in the sidewalls and bottom
floor of the channel. It should be ensured that the grooves provided on the sidewalls are parallel
to each other and square with respect to bottom of channel. Also check the distance between the
bottom of channel to the top of the operating platform. If any discrepancy is observed then
suitable corrections should be carried out before proceeding further. Refer to figure ( c1 & c2 )
below showing cross section of stoplog frame embedded in grooves in side walls.
In case a slab is used to cover the channel then check whether sufficient clearance is available in
the opening provided in the slab for insertion and removal of stoplogs. Ideally the opening
provided in the slabs should be wider by 400 mm than the width of opening provided on the wall
for stoplog and at least 400 mm across to enable in and out movement of stoplog with lifting
beam.
-5-
Figure (c1)
2. If everything is as required then ensure that the groove faces of the first stage grout are
roughened for better adhesion with the second stage grout.
3. If the frames are supplied in multiple pieces than follow the procedure as explained at the end of
this section (B).
Figure (c2)
-6-
4. In case of single-piece frame, lift the stoplog frame assembly comprising of two side vertical
members and bottom sill member and then carefully lower the assembly into the grooves of the
sidewall.
If frame height is more than 3 meters then it is possible that frames are supplied in multiple
pieces / segments for ease in transportation and ease at site handling.
In case of a multi-piece frame, remove the bottom most frame segments {Segment I (Right) and I
(Left)} from the packing and check their correctness as per the drawing. Thereafter pre-assemble
the bottom sill member with 1st segment of vertical side members (Left side as well as Right
side). The vertical side segments and bottom sill members are marked for ease in identification
and assembly.
After the side segments are bolted and dowelled to the bottom sill member, tie the top end of the
side segments using a removable tie bar (painted red) on to the top of vertical 1st segment. Refer
figure ( d ) showing use of tie bar in installation of frame. Lift this assembled 1st segment frame
and put in place in the groove.
Figure (d)
5. After fully lowering the frame assembly in the groove ensures that the bottom sill is flush with
the floor of channel. Also ensure that the side guides of the frame are at an equal distance from
the face of the side walls of the channels.
Figure (e1)
-7-
Figure (e2)
6. Check the horizontal plane of the entire face of the bottom sill using straight edge / bubble level
and if the plane is not correct then use the 6 nos. M10 tapped holes given on the bottom sill to
bring the sill in plane. Refer to figure ( e1 & e2 ) above showing cross section of bottom member
for Stainless steel frame & Aluminum frames and leveling provision on this member. For jacking
the sill member use temporary M10 bolts (not provided by us) which should be flushed by
cutting or grinding with the surface after grouting in case these are projecting above the channel
invert. The entire face of the bottom sill should be in a perfect horizontal plane to minimize the
leakage from between the bottom sill face and the bottom seal of log no. 1.
Figure (f1)
Figure (f2)
-8-
7. Check the vertical plane of the entire face of the side members using bubble level and if the
plane is not correct then use the M10 tapped holes given on the vertical side members to bring
the vertical side members in vertical plane. Refer to figure ( f1 & f2 ) above showing cross
section of vertical side member for Stainless steel frame & Aluminum frame and leveling
provision on this member. For jacking the vertical side member use temporary M10 bolts (not
provided by us).
8. Generally during manufacturing of aluminum stoplogs the clearance between the frame and the
log segments is maintained 4 mm minimum on each side & 8 mm maximum on each side. In
case of Stainless steel / Composite stoplogs this gap is maintained 8 mm minimum on each side
& 12 mm maximum on each side depending upon the log width and overall height of the frame.
Check GA drawing to see the exact clearance provided in your ordered stoplogs. While installing
the frame ensure that the entire frame height is in plumb within 2 mm from top to bottom so as to
avoid any interference during log up and down movement.
9. In case of stoplogs provided with frame mounted side seals, the side rubber seal is kept 1 to 2
mm longer than the frame segment length. During installation this side seal should be suitably
sized by carefully cutting and matched with the corresponding side seal mounted on the lower
frame portion so that no gap exists at the joint in the seal. This joint should then be glued
together using adhesive (like Loctite-495 or similar adhesive) so as to offer a continuous joint
free seal from bottom to top of frame.
10. Once the entire frame assembly is placed in position then after thoroughly cleaning the stoplog
frame assembly, unpack the stoplogs and clean them from any dirt / dust which may have
entered the packing. Thoroughly clean the mating faces of stoplogs which will come in contact
with sealing arrangement in the frame assembly.
11. Now bring a log segment and move it within the frame from top to bottom to check for
interference free smooth movement. This should be done a few times to verify correctness of
frame position. For this check, the log can either be manually handled or handled using a lifting
beam, if provided. To understand the procedure for use of lifting beam refer to “Operation of
Stoplogs” given later in this manual.
12. If interference free smooth movement from top to bottom of log frame is not observed then it
means that frame position needs to be corrected.
13. Check the squareness between the bottom sill and side segments of frame, check the plumb of
the side segments and also the distance between the side segments.
14. Once interference free movement is achieved then only proceed with the grouting.
15. Shutter up the gap between the side walls and either sides of the side frame segments along the
two vertical walls of the channel and on either side of the bottom sill and the floor of the channel.
16. Carefully pour high precision, non-shrink, quick setting fluid grout in the gaps between the
groove and stoplog frame ensuring that the gap is totally filled. While pouring the grout ensure
that no grout goes inside C-portion of the side segments where rubber seals are mounted. Allow
grout to cure thoroughly, usually allowing at least six clear days for proper curing. Clean off any
excess grout material.
-9-
In case of a multi-piece frame, grouting on sides should not be done up to the top end of the side
segments. A distance of at least 300 mm (12”) from the top end of the side segment should be
left un-grouted to enable removal of tie bar and fitment of subsequent side segment number II.
17. After the grout is set, remove the tie bar (painted red) fixed to the top of side segments no. I and
also remove all the bracing support flats as well as the shuttering.
18. Recheck the plumb and alignment of the grouted segments to confirm that the initial setting is
correct. If it is observed that the plumb and alignment got disturbed during grouting then break
open the fresh concrete to remove the segments. Thereafter once again carry out the above
mentioned procedure and get the correct installation of segments.
19. If the setting is correct allow sufficient days for the grout to cure thoroughly.
With the above procedure, installation of single-piece frame in grooves provided in wall is complete.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
However for multi-piece frame of stoplog following additional processes needs to be carried out.
1. Commence with the next stage of installation in which side segments no. II (L&R) are to be
mounted on the grouted side segments no. I (L&R).
2. For this remove the side segments no. II from its packing box and check their correctness from
the drawing.
3. Thereafter fasten side segments no. II (L&R) on top of side segment no. I (L&R) ensuring that
tongue and groove are properly seated. In case of stoplogs provided with frame mounted side
seals, the side rubber seal is kept 1 to 2 mm longer than the frame segment length. During
installation this side seal should be suitably sized by carefully cutting and matched with the
corresponding side seal mounted on the lower frame portion so that no gap exists at the joint in
the seal. This joint should then be glued together using adhesive so as to offer a continuous joint
free seal from bottom to top of frame.
4. After the side segments are bolted up, tie the top ends of the right and left side segments no. II
using the tie bar (painted red).
5. Check the plumb of the side segments no. II as well as the distance between the side segments.
7. Follow the procedure described above for fastening all the balance side segments over each
other.
8. Once all the side segments i.e. from segments I (L&R) to segments topmost segment are grouted
then check for correctness of alignment and verticality of all the segments.
9. Clean all the segments from any concrete or grout adhering to it.
- 10 -
10. Remove the masking tape from the sealing face of the rubber seal and clean the rubber seal.
With the above procedure installation of multi-piece frame in grooves provided in wall is complete.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING:
Each stoplog assembly is tested for non-acceptance of 0.1 mm thick feeler gauge between mating
sealing faces of sectional stoplogs and stoplog frame before dispatch from plant. Stoplogs are
dispatched only when they meet the seal clearance criteria specified in applicable standard /
specification and as accepted by JASH during the finalization of order. Improper installation
may result into deterioration in stop log seal clearance criteria and thereby affect leakage
performance for which JASH cannot be held responsible.
Hence JASH assumes no liability for leakage performance and interference free movement
of stoplogs if the entire installation has not been done under the supervision of a competent
Engineer following JASH instructions.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 11 -
OPERATION OF STOPLOGS
The supplied stoplogs can be lifted or lowered in its frame by (A) using mechanized hoisting
arrangement and a Lifting Beam, or (B) manually using Lifting Rods. Please verify from the
approved GA drawing the type of arrangement offered for lifting / lowering of stoplog in the
stoplog frame. After ascertaining this, follow the installation procedure (A) or (B) as given
hereunder.
To check whether the stoplog frame assembly is correctly installed and to check for unobstructed
and smooth operation of sectional stoplogs in frame assembly, the first stoplog should be lowered
from top to bottom and then lifted back from bottom to top a few times using lifting beam. Adopt the
procedure as given below for this:
1. Pickup the lifting beam using a hoist / crane provided for this purpose.
2. Bring lifting beam above the log placed on the floor / storage rack and lower it on the log so
as to engage the hook provided on lifting beam with the log pins. Refer figure ( g ).
Figure (g)
3. When the lower tapered portion of the hook touches the lifting pin of the log, the hook
assembly moves apart and allows it to engage with the stoplog pins. Hence engagement of
lifting beam to log is automatic. Refer figure ( k ).
Figure (k)
- 12 -
4. Once this is done, the stoplog can be lifted along with the lifting beam. Take the lifting beam
with the log to the installed frame location and lower the assembly into the frame groove.
Keep on checking for non-acceptance of 0.1 mm thick feeler gauge between mating sealing
faces of sectional stoplogs and stoplog frame at various points while lowering of stoplogs.
Refer figure ( l1 ) to understand the sealing arrangement provided on sides and bottom in
case of frame mounted seals.
Figure (l1)
Refer figure ( l2 ) to understand the sealing arrangement provided on sides and bottom in
case of log mounted seals.
Figure (l2)
5. Once the stoplog comes to a rest at the bottom portion of the frame then check for non-
acceptance of 0.1 mm thick feeler gauge between mating sealing faces provided at bottom of
- 13 -
sectional stoplogs and the bottom member of stoplog frame at various points across the
width.
6. Subsequently raise the stoplog along with the lifting beam till the top of the frame assembly
while simultaneously checking for non-acceptance of 0.1 mm thick feeler gauge between
mating sealing faces of sectional stoplogs and stoplog frame at various points
7. Once all the checks as well as down and upwards movements are found satisfactory then the
frame assembly is ready for insertion of balance sectional stoplogs. To do this the first
stoplog has to be re-lowered to the bottom most position.
Figure (m)
8. When the log reaches the bottom most position then further lowering of the lifting beam will
allow the hooks to go below the pins of the log. To take the hook away from the pin and
disengage the lifting beam from the log, pull the nylon rope provided at the center of the
lifting beam. Refer figure ( m ).
9. Keeping the nylon rope taut, lift the lifting beam using the hoist.
10. Remove the lifting beam from the frame assembly and engage it with the subsequent log.
11. Repeat the procedure 2 to 10 for further installation of logs into the frame.
12. After inserting all the sectional stoplogs, recheck the seat clearance on the sides, bottom
invert and between two sectional stoplogs. Once this is found OK then the installation is
ready for water leakage testing and thereafter for commissioning.
The lifting rod pickup arrangement is suitable where the log weight is low, the log width is less
and the installation depth is less i.e. in all those cases where the logs can be easily lifted
manually. The lifting rod arrangement are of two types (i) suitable for engaging with lifting pins
provided on sides of the stoplogs, (ii) suitable for engaging with dovetail slot provided on top of
the logs. (Only in case of Aluminum Logs)
Depending upon the type of lifting rod arrangement provided follow any of two procedures
given hereunder :
- 14 -
(i) Using lifting rod suitable for engaging with lifting pins provided on sides of the stoplogs :
1. Bring the lifting rods above the log placed on the floor and lower it on the log so as to engage
the hook provided on lifting rod with the log pins. Refer figure ( n ).
Figure (n)
2. Once this is done the stoplog can be lifted along with the lifting rods. Take the lifting rods
with the log to the installed frame location and lower the assembly into the frame groove.
Keep on checking for non-acceptance of 0.1 mm thick feeler gauge between mating sealing
faces of sectional stoplogs and stoplog frame at various points while lowering of stoplogs.
Refer figure ( l ) to understand the sealing arrangement provided on sides and bottom.
3. Once the stoplog comes to a rest at the bottom portion of the frame then check for non-
acceptance of 0.1 mm thick feeler gauge between mating sealing faces provided at bottom of
sectional stoplogs and the bottom member of stoplog frame at various points across the
width.
4. Subsequently raise the stoplog till the top of the frame assembly while simultaneously
checking for non-acceptance of 0.1 mm thick feeler gauge between mating sealing faces of
sectional stoplogs and stoplog frame at various points.
5. Once all the checks as well as down and upward movement are found satisfactory then the
frame assembly is ready for insertion of balance sectional stoplogs.
6. Repeat the procedure 1 to 5 for further installation of logs into the frame.
7. After inserting all the sectional stoplogs, recheck the seat clearance on the sides, bottom
invert and between two sectional stoplogs. Once this is found OK then the installation is
ready for water leakage testing and thereafter for commissioning.
(ii) Using lifting rod suitable for engaging with dovetail slot provided on top of the stoplogs :
- 15 -
1. Bring the lifting rods above the log placed on the floor and engage them with the log. To
engage, insert the lifting rod in to the dovetail slot provided on the top of the log by keeping
the lifting rod in position as shown in figure ( o ). Thereafter rotate the lifting rod by 90°.
This will allow the rod to get engaged with the dovetail slot of the log. Refer figure ( p ).
Figure (o)
2. Once this is done the stoplog can be lifted alongwith the lifting rods.
Refer figure ( l1 & l2 ) to understand the sealing arrangement provided.
Figure (p)
5. Once all the checks as well as down and upward movements are found satisfactory then the
frame assembly is ready for insertion of balance sectional stoplogs.
6. To disengage lifting rod from the stoplog rotate the lifting rod by 90° and pull the rods out of
stoplog dovetail slot.
- 16 -
7. Repeat the procedure 1 to 6 for further installation of logs into the frame.
8. After inserting all the sectional stoplogs, recheck the seat clearance on the sides, bottom
invert and between two sectional stoplogs. Once this is found OK then the installation is
ready for water leakage testing and thereafter for commissioning.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 17 -
MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS:
“DO’S”
1. Before Stoplogs are put into regular service or after being left in storage for considerable length
of time, each stop log should be raised and all foreign matter carefully removed from the mating
sealing faces on stop log sides as well as on the top. Also the sealing face of the bottom seals
should be cleaned and checked for damage if any during storage.
2. The nuts of all constructional and foundation bolts should be checked for tightness every twelve
months.
3. If the stoplogs are installed in situations where debris or foreign matter can build up then it is
recommended that the stop log frame grooves be periodically cleaned out of any debris so that
when the stoplogs are to be inserted in an emergency the operator faces minimum problems.
4. The protective paint on all painted items should be examined every six months for signs of
damage.
5. ALL LIFTING EQUIPMENT, lifting beams, lifting poles, lifting slings, shackles etc. must be re
tested in accordance with in Country standards for this type of equipment. ALWAYS wash off
with clean water after use, grease moving parts and CHECK for any visually check for damage.
6. MAKE SURE! The surrounding access area around any stop log frame, log insertion point is free
from clutter; one small mistake can injure or cause a life threatening event.
7. Treat this equipment with respect and it will perform to your expectations.
- 18 -
“DON’TS”
“DON’TS”
1. Do not store stoplogs in a way that these are exposed to sunlight as this would reduce the age of
the log seals.
2. Do not store stoplogs in a way that they get twisted over prolonged storage periods.
3. Do not store stoplogs in a way that the invert seals or side seals (if provided) remain
continuously pressed as this would reduce the effectiveness of the log invert seals.
4. Do not sling or handle the stoplogs, while transporting from storage to installation site or from
installation site to storage area, in a way that the log invert seals or the mating sealing area on
sides of logs gets damaged by slings or tackles used in handling.
5. NEVER use stoplogs designed for another application in a different location, they may be under
designed for that application.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 19 -
TROUBLE SHOOTING AT SITE
There are a number of problems that can arise with stoplogs at site. We are giving some of these
problems and the methods of repair. Hence before requesting a site visit of the manufacturer’s
representative, the contractor should check the problem faced and carryout trouble shooting as
per guidance given hereunder.
Jash stoplogs are supplied duly factory tested for movement. Hence if movement problem is
encountered then possibly it is outcome of faulty installation at site. JASH cannot be held
responsible for any faulty installation by client / contractor. The reasons attributing for this problem
are as under
Before final installation of the frame & pouring the second stage grout, checking for the interference
free movement of the stoplog in the frame is most important activity. If the interference free
movement is not observed at that point then do rectify this as at a later stage this becomes a very
laborious work. Once this problem is observed then verify where the movement of stoplog is
affected. Check as to whether any adjustment in frame can be done in this area. If no adjustment can
be done then only option is left is to remove the installed frame and reinstall strictly in line with
procedure given under chapter “INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR STOPLOG FRAMES”.
(B) Leakage:
Leakage is the problem that is most often encountered. However some leakage is permissible for this
product and hence do not expect zero leakage. Hence before requesting a site visit, the contractor
should check the quantum of leakage. Please verify the permissible leakage norms as per the
standard / technical specifications against which the supply is made or verify from QAP /
contract documents the agreed permissible leakage norms. If the leakage is observed to be
within permissible limits then there is no need for a site visit.
Leakage at site is mostly a result of improper erection (installation) or damage to the sealing
arrangement. If the erection has been done correctly, without twisting and distorting the frame or
face wall anchored stoplogs and if the sealing arrangement is not damaged then excessive leakage is
generally not observed.
If the leakage is way above the permissible limits then the contractor should carry out further checks
as follows:
1. Check for any damage to sealing arrangement. If seals are found damaged then replace them.
2. In case of multipiece stoplogs when seal joints of frame mounted side seals are not correctly
joined and glued then there is fair possibility of leakage from this joint. Under sized cutting
of side seals at joint can result into gap in the seal leading to leakage and over size cutting of
- 20 -
side seals at joint can result in to bulging of seals also leading to leakage. Undersized cut seal
joints have to be replaced and oversized cut seal joint has to be recut properly.
3. Check for concrete or paint or other foreign substance on the sealing area. It is not difficult to
get paint or foreign substance on the sealing area even in the shop and hence in the field it is
very difficult to prevent paint, concrete or other foreign substance from getting on to the
sealing area. This can happen during installation of stoplogs or while carrying out subsequent
civil work around the stoplogs installation, and during carrying out painting after installation
of the stoplogs.
First remove the stoplogs and check the mating sealing area on the stoplogs. If there is paint
or other foreign substance on the sealing faces of frame and logs then this should be cleaned
by scraping and removing the same without damaging the surfaces.
4. Leakage from the bottom sill area at channel invert can be on account of collection of
concrete or asphalt on the top of bottom sill member on which the bottom most stop log rests.
The solution is to scrape and remove this foreign material without damaging the seal while
doing so. To do so the stoplogs have to be lifted for access to top portion of bottom sill
member.
1. The stoplogs will not close all the way. The most obvious problem would be an obstruction
beneath the stop log at the invert level due to debris. Hence cleaning of this debris is required
to be done to enable the stop log to close.
2. Difficulty in lowering or lifting stoplogs or jamming of stoplogs in the grooves during lifting
or lowering is encountered. This is mostly on account of improper balancing of stop log
lifting arrangement resulting into unbalanced movement of stoplogs in grooves.
