What Is It
We can achieve the perfect look by wearing the right accessories. Do you
know that we can make our own fashion accessories? Making our own
fashion accessories requires a lot of planning, there are so many things we need to
consider, like what type of accessories you want, materials you need, where to purchase
them and how much money you’re going to spend for that particular accessory.
Purchasing and computing for production cost are two of the important things in
making fashion accessories.

3
It’s all about accessories! You can create your own accessories that can make a different
look in your eyes. You can wear the cheapest clothes but you can still look expensive,
all you need is a little bit of planning.

Product Cost

It refers to all the expenses incurred to create a product. It is the total sum of money
you used in creating a project. Computing production cost is necessary to determine if
it fits one’s budget in making that product in case it’s for personal use. In terms of
business product cost is important to determine the mark up you need to add in the
product to gain profit.

Product cost categories includes direct material, Indirect materials, direct labor and
production overhead.

Direct materials are the cost of raw materials or parts that you used in making your
product/project. For example, in making earing the wire you used is your direct
material.
Direct labor Refers to the cost you paid in case you hired a worker in making the
product. In case you didn’t hire a worker, you can add cost in your product for your
own effort.

Production overhead It is a factory related cost in making the product, such as the
cost of machinery and the cost to operate the machinery. For example, you used sewing
machine in making your project, you can add an estimated amount for using the sewing
machine.
Fare or the cost of transportation in buying you materials can be added here in your
production overhead.
Indirect Material are the cost of materials that are used in making the product but are
not directly traceable to the product. Example would be the glue, tape you used in
making your project.

Computing production cost

Shirley wants to compute for the production cost of her self-made accessories to
determine how much mark-up she will going to add for the item. Here is the list of her
expenses

Materials Quantity Unit cost Total Cost

(Items) How many How much per How much all
item
wire 3 yards P50/ yard P 150.00
Beads small 2 pack 30/pack 60.00
Beads big 2 pack 35/pack 70.00
Glue 1 bottle 25/bottle 25.00
Masking tape 1 roll 20/roll 20.00
P 325.00
Grand total

On the way to the market she paid for the tricycle P50 back and forth. And she made a
total of 30 earrings all and all. To compute for the production cost, we just add the
grand total and the transportation she paid in purchasing the materials P325 + 50 =
P375 is the total production cost. In determining the production cost per item made we
just divide the total production cost in the number of items made. Shirley made 30
items; the computation would be: P375 / 30 = P12.50 is the product cost for each
earring she made.

4
Purchasing Materials in Making fashion accessories
Purchasing is the act of buying the materials you needed for the project/product. It is
one of the important factor in making fashion accessories, in determining what to buy
you need to decide first what kind of fashion accessories you want to create, the accents
and style for you to know and list down the materials needed to buy in the marketplace
for costing, to save time from roaming around what to buy in the marketplace and avoid
forgetting something that is needed. You need to organized things to avoid such thing
to happen.
The best way is to list down all the items/materials you will buy before going to the
market for you to point out the things you really need. And by doing so you will avoid
wasting time and resources, and you will have an idea on how much money you needed
to avoid shortage or overspending of money. Do not buy more than you can afford. Also,
in purchasing you need to ensure that the materials you bought is in good quality, you
must check it before paying it to avoid wasting of time of returning it for damages.

What’s New
Directions: Describe in detail what is being shown in the Picture.
Write your answer in the space provided

A. B.

What Is It
Are you ready to start your project? There are many techniques and
methods in making fashion accessories. In this module we are going to
focus on the most basic techniques and methods that are useful and you can easily
make in the comfort of your home.

Techniques, methods and procedure in making fashion accessories

A. Wiring
This technique is done with the use of jewelry wire and findings to make other
materials connect with one another. Findings are the item that connect
together the beads in making fashion jewelries. Items like fasteners, clasps,
connectors and the like. Wire components are all then link to one another
without soldering and heating of wires.
This approach, a wire is bent into a loop or others shapes and then the wire
will be wrapped around itself to finish the wire component, this make the shape and
loop permanent. The basic tools that are essential in making wire wrapped fashion
jewelries includes flat nose pliers, round nose pliers, chain nose pliers and wire
cutter. Wire are available in variety of materials such as brass wire, sterling silver,
gold filled wire and copper wire.

Wire is measured by diameter, the lower the gauge the thicker the wire, fairly heavy
wire is 12 0r 14 gauge and it is ideal in making bangles and choker necklace while16-
gauge wire is good for making jump rings and links for necklaces and bracelets.

Completed beaded wires

1. Cut a wire longer in length than the beads to be put in

2. Make a secure end of the wire in a pair of round nose pliers by bending the wire
to create a loop.
3. Put the beads on the wire by pushing them to the end.
4. Create a loop at the end of a wire to make it secure

3
Making a hook

1. Cut a few millimeters of wire to make a hook

2. Turn a loop in the end and file the other end.
3. Curve the wire back around your pliers and clip off any excess wire.
4. Bend up the end of the wire to make a good shape and file the end.

B. Stringing
This tecnique is requires different types of stringing materials such as wire
cable , bead cord, leather and cotton cord, rubber, plastic and elastic cord and
the like. In this approach components will just put into a string, such as
beads, pearls and other choosen ornaments together with a fastener. Fastener
is an important part of a fashion accessories that hold together two pieces of
materials example of this in fashion jewelries are clasp it is an item that allows
a jewelry to be easily be put on and taken off.
Knotting between the beads
1. Prepare a thread twice as much as the length of your finished necklace.
2. The needle depends the size of your beads and how many knots, you must
allow even more threads for a lot of knots to be made. To prevent you doing re-
knot due to shortage of thread.
3. Use a needle in the knots between beads for the spacing to be equal.

4
Attaching a fastener (lobster clasp)
1. Make a single knot next to your beads and leave a needle in it.
2. Attach your fastener and leave a space for more knots in between and the knot
with a needle in it. Then put the knot into the space, you must remember how
many you have used and how much space you left, for you to duplicate on the
other side.
3. After you made the knot put the thread in the needle that you left into the knot,
and pull the needle to tighten everything.
4. Put a drop of glue to your last knot and cut off your loose thread.

C. Sewing
It is the art and craft of attaching objects or fastening by stitching using needle
and thread. For so many years sewing was done by the hand but in 19th and
20th century.
The invention of sewing machine and computerization led to the mass
production of export sewn projects, hand sewing is still practiced all around the
globe.
Sewing was used for repairing or attaching designs, ornaments to clothes.
Clothing that was faded or worn out would be taken apart and the reusable
cloth will be sewn together into new items that are useful or for practical use.
Example would be an old denim jean converted into denim bag; old t-shirt
converted into headband. Sewing also involves putting decorations on our
accessories like putting beads in our bags, headbands and the like. An easy
method of stitching hems and small sewing projects is hand stitching, it is also
for repairing and adding ornaments and design to clothes.

There are so many methods in hand stitching but let us just focus on the common and
basic methods.

1. Running Stitch - A simple up and down stitch and is the easiest and fastest
way to baste, gather, and sew a seam. Easiest stitch for outlining.

5
2. Back stitch - the strongest hand stitch for seams.

3. Whipstitch - over the edge type of hand stitching, great to use on fabric that is
thicker and don’t fray. It will join pieces of fabric together and seal edges.

4. Slip stitch (invisible stitch)- A common hemstitch that is used when you do not
want visible stitches.

What Is It
Congratulations! You are now ready to start your first project, your very
first fashion accessories project. Again, remember, you need your
knowledge about the techniques and methods in making fashion
accessories. In this module, you need to focus on the most basic
techniques and methods (specifically Wiring) in making one.

This module will help you make your first fashion accessories project that can be
easily done while taking the vibes and comfort of your own home.

Before you head on to project making using Wiring Technique/Method, let this module
walk you through this vital technique/method again.

Techniques, methods and procedure in making fashion accessories

Wiring

This technique is done with the use of jewelry wire and findings to make other
materials connect with one another. Findings are the items that connect
together the beads in making fashion jewelries. Items like fasteners, clasps,
connectors and the like. Wire components are that entire link to one another
without soldering and heating of wires.
This approach, a wire is bent into a loop or others shapes and then the wire will
wrapped around itself to finish the wire component, this make the shape and
loop permanent. The basic tools that are essential in making wire wrapped
fashion jewelries includes flat nose pliers, round nose pliers, chain nose pliers

3
and wire cutter. Wires are available in variety of materials such as brass wire,
sterling silver, gold filled wire and copper wire.

1. Cut a wire longer in length than the beads to be put in.

2. Make a secure end of the wire in a pair of round nose pliers by bending the wire
to create a loop.
3. Put the beads on the wire by pushing them to the end.
4. Create a loop at the end of a wire to make it secure.

Making a hook

1. Cut a few millimeters of wire to make a hook.

2. Turn a loop in the end and file the other end.
3. Curve the wire back around your pliers and clip off any excess wire.
4. Bend up the end of the wire to make a good shape and file the end.

4
Precautionary Measures in making fashion accessories

Your safety is very important, that is why before you go finally to your activity,
this module will help give you a run through of some safety precautions to ensure
your safety while doing your very first project in fashion accessories – wiring
technique.

Below are safety measures that you have to observe and be mindful of.

BASIC LABORATORY (House) RULES

1. ALWAYS wear your proper apron/PPE while working.

2. ALWAYS use goggles or safety glasses to prevent getting small materials into
your eyes.
3. ALWAYS use proper/appropriate tool in doing the task at hand.
4. NEVER play around while working.
5. ALWAYS focus on your work.

Activity Plan in making fashion accessories

You are almost there! But besides safety precautions, you must be aware
too that in order for you to be successful on your first project you must have a sound
plan. Even engineers, architects, surgeons, teachers, and the likes make a plan before
they subject themselves into action. All successful endeavours are products of a well-
thought plan.

What Is It
Hello! Today you will be making use of a new technique in doing fashion
accessories. I hope that you get to guess through our activity above the
specific method that you will be using for your second activity project.

Just like the previous module, this is also designed to help you find ease in making
your next fashion accessories project at home and at your own pace as well.

Before you get on, below is a review of the basic concepts of method/technique that
you need for your activity for this week.

Techniques, methods and procedure in making fashion accessories

Stringing

This tecnique requires different types of stringing materials such as wire cable ,
bead cord, leather and cotton cord, rubber, plastic and elastic cord and the like.
In this approach components will just put into a string, such as beads, pearls
and other choosen ornaments together with a fastener. Fastener is an
important part of a fashion accessories that hold together two pieces of
materials example of this in fashion jewelries are clasp it is an item that allows
a jewelry to be easily be put on and taken off.

Knotting between the beads

1. Prepare a thread twice as much as the length of your finished necklace.
2. The needle depends the size of your beads and how many knots, you must
allow even more threads for a lot of knots to be made. To prevent you doing
re-knot due to shortage of thread.
3. Use a needle in the knots between beads for the spacing to be equal.

3
Precautionary Measures in making fashion accessories

Your safety is very important, that is why before you go finally to your activity,
this module will help give you a run through of some safety precautions to ensure
your safety while doing your project activity in fashion accessories – stringing

Aside from safety precautions, you must be aware
also that in order for you to be successful on any activity project you must have a well-
thought plan. As they say, “failure to prepare means you are preparing to fail.”
That having said, that is how important planning is.
