2. Wired Network Design

2.1 Discerption
Network design should follow hierarchical topology to enable designing
network in layers. The benefits are Cost savings, Ease of understanding,
Easy network growth and Improved fault isolation.

2.2 Hierarchical Network Design

The hierarchical design model has three basic layers:
· Core layer: Connects distribution layer devices.
· Distribution layer: Interconnects the smaller local networks.
· Access layer: Provides connectivity for network hosts and end devices.

Core Layer
The Core-layer (network backbone) provides high-speed, scalable, reliable,
fault tolerance and low-latency connectivity, this layer is only available in
one place (Main building). To serve several distribution switches that
connect different buildings.

The core layer should have the following characteristics:

· Offer high reliability,
· Provide redundancy and load balancing,
· High-speed and aggregate links,
· Provide fault tolerance,
· Flexibility,
· Full mesh topology,
· Modular chassis-based design,
· Devices at the core layer should contain redundant power supplies and
hot swappable components,
· Layer 3 devices, including multilayer switches,
· Facilitate network growth,
· The network design must permit the occasional, but necessary, hardware
and software upgrade/change to be made without disrupting any network
applications,
· The core should also have the minimal control plane configuration
combined with highly available devices configured with the correct
amount of physical redundancy to provide for this non-stop service
capability,
· Intelligent network services such as QoS, Security, load balancing,
Network virtualization, etc.,
· Routers or multilayer switches that combine routing and switching in the
same device, and

· Routing protocols that scale well and converge quickly.

Distribution Layer
The distribution layer is the isolation point between the network’s access
layers and core layers. The distribution layer is associated with routing,
filtering, and is the communication point between the core layer and the
access layer.

Some of key characteristics of distribution-layer are as following:

· Provide redundancy and load balancing,
· Isolating the core from access layer failures or disruptions,
· Filtering and managing traffic flows,
· Routing between access layer VLANs,
· Layer 3 devices, including multilayer switches,
· Enforcing access control policies,
· Summarizing routes before advertising the routes to the core,
· QoS mechanisms, such as priority-based queuing,
· Demarcation between static and dynamic routing protocols,
· Departmental or workgroup access, and
· Broadcast or multicast domain definition.

Access Layer
The access layer is used to control user access to the internetwork resources
such as PCs, printers, Wireless client, and IP phones. Access layer services
and devices reside inside each building of a campus, each remote site and
server farm, and at the enterprise edge.

Some of key characteristics of access-layer are as following:

· Using VLANs and IP subnets for segregating user groups and traffic,
· Ensuring that the network does not become too complex,
· Easy troubleshooting when a problem occurs,
· Layer 2 support,
· Providing Quality of Service (QoS), and
· Providing Port Security.

2.3 Equipment and Material

· Switches: with high availability services

· Core Layer Switch must support the following:

· High-speed backbone handles very high forwarding rates,
· Support link aggregation (10GbE connections which is currently the
fastest available Ethernet connectivity,
· Support additional hardware redundancy features,
· Intelligent network services such as QoS, Security and load balancing,
