Austin Labor Day Cup: RULES OF PLAY

Tournament Goals:

We always compete to win.  But success cannot be defined by an uncontrollable.

Player perspective: Bonding
Players enjoy the experience of traveling out of town for multiple games over the weekend.  It is a good
opportunity to bond and build positive relationships. Our focus with the players this weekend will be based
around our core values:

Trust
 Play your position, trust others do play theirs
 Cover each other when mistakes are made and battle together!
Accountability
 Compete and give 100%, regardless of the score
 Take ownership of your mistakes and forgive others for theirs.
Courage
 With the ball – try 1v1 moves, be positive, shoot!
 Without the ball – make forward runs, block shots, tackle hard.
Humility
 Don’t think less of yourself but think of yourself less.
 Win, lose or draw, be humble and grateful.
Service
 Help teammates on and off the field
 Play any position with a positive attitude to serve the team

Play-time:

 Every player should play a minimum of 50% of the match, unless:

o Late
o Injured (coach must remove them from the field of play)
o Sick
o Misbehaving.
 Some will be rewarded with >50% based on factors such as, but not limited to:
o Performance / Impact
o Attitude
o Enthusiasm
o Work rate.

Coach perspective: Development
Multiple competitive games over a short period of time give me an opportunity to work with and educate the
players. Coach Rich and I will not deviate from our development philosophy and sacrifice any core values in
order to ‘win at all costs’.  Regardless of score line, we want the players to compete, work hard, and maintain
a positive attitude.

Parent Perspective: Support

How do we define what it means to win?  Help us create an enjoyable environment for the players, where
they are encouraged to take risks without fear of being criticized for every micro-mistake in the car journey
home.  Please sit down, relax, smile, and encourage all players on both teams. Don’t ever underestimate the
importance of your role as a spectator.  Thank you for understanding.

Nutrition and Hydration

Eating on Tournament Days

Soccer players will be able to perform best if they eat:
Carbohydrate-rich meal 3 hours before a game
Small snack 1-2 hours before the game
Choosing meals and snacks high in carbohydrate, moderate in protein, and low in fat will ensure
quick digestion of food and optimal carbohydrate availability during the game or practice

Examples of Pre-Game Meals (3 hrs before)

Bagel with yogurt and fruit
Cereal with low-fat milk and a piece of fruit
Fruit smoothie and whole-wheat bread
Pancakes with syrup and fruit and low-fat cottage cheese
Pasta with tomato sauce and small chunks of chicken
Rice bowl with small amounts of tofu or lean beef
Turkey or peanut butter sandwich with milk and a piece of fruit

Examples of Pre-Game Snacks (1-2 hrs before)

Low-fiber cereal with skim milk
Toast with jam or honey and skim milk
Nonfat fruit-flavored yogurt
Energy bar (mainly carbohydrate)
Cereal or granola bar and banana
Graham crackers

Hydration
Drink water during warm up, after substitutions, during half time
Page 6 of 8
Drink water/sports drink after game to replenish lost fluids

Post-Game
Players MUST eat / drink within 1 hour of game
WHY? During this time, the body is the most efficient at restoring muscle glycogen. Thus,
immediately following the game, it is a good idea to work on replacing this fuel with a sport drink and
small snack.
To continuously recover and prepare for the next game, refueling must be extended and include a
carbohydrate-rich, post-game meal 1-2 hours later

Tournaments – the impact of Multiple Games

Little time is available for athletes to recover and properly replace fuel stores and lost fluid. Failing to
replace these stores will result in decreased performance, fatigue & compromise a soccer player’s
skill, speed, and concentration and possibly increases the risk of injury. In a hot environment,
dehydration is also of concern. During tournaments, sport drinks are an absolute necessity to prevent
dehydration and to maintain carbohydrate availability (blood glucose feeds the brain!)

Coaching Coverage
With the enormity of our tournament, there is a possibility that Coach Richard and I will be assigned to
cover games for other teams which will pull us away from coaching the 2010B Orange I & II team’s games this
weekend. When we get our assignments, we will update all if this occurs or not and who will be covering the
team in our absence. If this happens the coach covering will be given a line-up and sub patterns while they are
with the teams.

Please print the entire booklet and bring to the tournament!
