COURSE SYNOPSIS
This is a pre intermediate proficiency course which introduces students to basic
communication skills in an integrated manner, using the four skills of speaking, listening,
reading and writing. Particular emphasis is placed on developing oral communication skills.
The grammar and vocabulary aspects of the language are also covered. The course
provides a variety of language tasks and activities to develop students’ interpersonal
communication skills. Students will have a lot of opportunities to practise the language in a
wide variety of social contexts.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES


Upon completion of the course, students are able to:
1. Express matters in personal and social settings. (A1, P1)
2. Find the main ideas of standard speech on familiar matters. (C2)
3. Comprehend the main ideas in basic factual texts related to social settings. (C2)
4. Write phrases and sentences using appropriate grammar and vocabulary. (A2)

COURSE ASSESSMENTS DETAILS

Assessment 100%

1. Descriptive Writing (15%) – 40 minutes (Unit 1-6) Individual


This assessment will be done in class. The students will require to write a descriptive
essay. The essay should be written within 250-300 words.

2. Group Presentation (20%) (Unit 1-6) Group


a) General Informative Brochure 5%
Part 1: In group of 4s, students will prepare brochures related to unit 1-6.

b) Informative Presentation 15% – 30 minutes


Part 2: The students will present their brochures to the audience, highlighting
appropriate significant points and relevant details.
CLO which will be covered: CLO 4 (Brochure’s writing) & 1 (Role-play)

3. Group Discussion (15%) (Unit 1-6) Group


a) Group Discussion 15% – 25 minutes
In group of 4s, students will do a group discussion based on the prepared topic.

4. Reading Quiz (20%) – 60 minutes (Unit 1-4) Individual


This quiz tests students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary abilities where they
need to identify the main ideas and specific information from the basic factual texts
related to social settings.
* 2 comprehension essays

5. Listening Quiz (20%) – 60 minutes (Unit 1-6) Individual


This quiz requires students to listen to conversations in personal setting and social
settings in order to identify the main ideas and specific information.

6. Pair Informative Video Presentation (10%) – 25 minutes Pair


Based on the units in the text book, they need to share their experiences. This will be
videotaped and uploaded to class’s Facebook group or YouTube. Once they have
done this, they need to provide the link in UUM online learning and prepare a soft
copy of the video in CD form.

Students’ Attendance

 80 % attendance is a requirement. You are required to sign the attendance for


each class.
 Absenteeism (20%) includes :
1. medical leave
2. representing the university in sports, society, club, etc
3. other reasons (e.g. headache, stomachache, etc)
4. attending tests/exams/quizzes given by lecturers from other faculties
during English classes.
