Directions:
(01) Read and study the lesson and watch or listen to the Video Lecture of your Instructor is
conducting or uploading in Google Classroom, entitled Lesson 4.5 entitled PRECIPITATION
REACTIONS.
a. What mass of precipitate would you expect to obtain by mixing 250 mL of a solution
containing 4.88 g of Na2CrO4 with 200 mL of a solution containing 3.84 g of AgNO3?
What is the final nitrate ion concentration?
<3.75 g Ag2CrO4;5.02 x 10-2 M nitrate >
b. Predict whether mixing each pair of solutions will result in the formation of a
precipitate. If so, identify the precipitate.
1. FeCl2 + Na2S
<FeCl2(aq) + Na2S(aq) →FeS(aq) + 2NaCl(aq)>
2. NaOH + H3PO4
<NaOH(ag) + H3PO4(aq)→Na3PO4(aq) + H2O(aq)Precipitate is Na3PO4>
3. ZnCl2 + (NH4)2S
<ZnCl2(aq) + (NH4)2S(aq)→ZnS(aq) + NH4 Cl(aq)>
4. K2CO3 + BaCl2
<K2CO3(aq) + BaCl2(aq)→BaCO3(aq) + 2KCl(aq) Precipitate is BaCO3>
5. Ba(NO3)2 + Na2SO4
<Ba(NO3)2(aq) + Na2SO4(aq)→BaSO4(aq) + 2NaNO3(aq) Precipitate is BaSO4>
c. Adding 10.0 mL of a dilute solution of zinc nitrate to 246 mL of 2.00 M sodium sulfide
produced 0.279 g of a precipitate.
1. How many grams of zinc (II) nitrate and sodium sulfide were consumed to
produce this quantity of product?
<0.286 g>

<Each mole of sodium sulfate has two sodium ions and one sulfide ion, so the
concentration of sodium is twice the concentration of sodium sulfide, and the
concentration of sulfide ions is the same as the concentration of sodium sulfide.>
3. What is the concentration of the sulfide ion in solution after the precipitation
reaction, assuming no further reaction?
<1.91 M>
