Look at an atlas and you will see that New Zealand and Argentina are the closest countries to
Antarctica. 1______________ New Zealand’s best known one left from port Lyttelton near to
Christchurch in 1911. It was the Robert Falcon Scott expedition, and tragically the explorers died on
their return journey.
Both New Zealand and America maintain research bases in Antarctica: New Zealand’s is called
Scott Base, name after Sir Robert. In the 1950s and 60s America ran a massive operation called
“Deep Freeze”. The Americans made a tremendous impact on Christchurch, the site of their base.
They also found the New Zealand maidens attractive! Quite a few brides returned with them to
America. Christchurch is still the launching pad for Antarctic exploration. 2 _________ but
occasionally a brave crew has to risk a winter flight in response to a medical emergency.
There have been memorable times for New Zealand in Antarctica: particularly the exploits of Sir
Edmund Hillary, who the world had acknowledged in 1953 as the first climber, with Serpa Tensing,
to conquer Mount Everest. 3 _________ on the first overland crossing of Antarctica, via the South
Pole (1958). Christchurch museum has mementos of this and other Antarctic exploits. There is now
a first class Antarctic Centre which tourists enjoy, hard by Christchurch airport. 4 _________ .
Displays include snow chambers and live penguins. Brrrrrr! Tourists revel in it.
Isolation from the Northern Hemisphere is a challenge for our folk in the antipodes. It’s a twenty-
four hour flight to Europe. After completing their tertiary education young people often journey on
their O.E. - Overseas Experience. They go to Britain, America, Central Europe, and the
Mediterranean. Many have appreciated Polish hospitality. A pilgrimage to Auschwitz is a high
priority, followed by the delights of Krakow. 5 _________ where beauty and cruelty vie with each
other!

Dinosaurs died out more than 60 million years ago, so 0 how on earth can we tell what they used to
eat? Find out at the Cameron Museum, where you can step 1 in time and join some
dinosaurs enjoying their lunch. 2 you enter the new Meet the Dinosaurs exhibition,
you’ll meet four full-size dinosaur heads,3 of them munching away on their favourite
food. The model dinosaurs are 4 realistic that you could easily forget that they’re
5 real.
Scientists have pieced 6 information from fossils to work out that dinosaurs with
large claws and sharp teeth ate meat, while flatter teeth were used 7 grinding plants. So
Tyrannosaurus rex, with its prehistoric table manners 8 teeth as sharp as razors, might
not have been the 9 relaxing dinner guest!
But, 10 you’re a meat eater or a vegetarian, why not come along to the exhibition
and make sure you don’t miss an incredible day out!
