PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION

Determining Rhetorical Appeals

2. Identify one detail in the video that supports each:

Reason (Logos):
Answer: It supports every detail of the video because the speaker speaks about facts and
details about how devastating the typhoon is in the Philippines. It convinced people that the
speech in the video is well-researched, well-built, or otherwise worth their time.

Emotion (Pathos):
Answer: It supports every detail of the video because the speaker speaks through his
emotions. We can clearly see the emotions behind the speaker's speech and the emotions can also
speak for itself.

Credibility (Ethos):
Answer: It supports every detail of the video because the speaker represent the credibility
in the video by establishing a variety of factors, including status of the aftermath in the
Philippines after the typhoon, awareness of the climate change and credible resources according
to the research.

3. Decide which among the 3 appeals made the speech powerfully persuasive. Is it the
reason presented, the emotion highlighted, or the credibility of the speaker?

Answer:
Among the 3 rhetorical appeals found in that video, emotion (Pathos) hits different and
made an impact to the audience. Emotion highlighted in the video had made His speech very
effective and powerful because the speaker shows and explains the tragedy that not only him and
his family encountered but also a thousand of lives devastated, and even while he’s delivering his
speech, he cannot control his emotions because of his experience in the country. Emotion is also
clear in the video because no matter how formal we need to be outside the country, we cannot
control our emotions when something tragic happened to us.

4. Support your answer in the question which appeal made the speech powerfully
persuasive with details from the video that you watched.

Answer:
The speech was very persuasive enough because of the emotions shown. We can clearly
observe that the speaker is seeking for help and explaining not just his experiences but also
speaks for those who were also devasted in the typhoon. We can also tell from his words that
there is a tragic behind his speech and as well as the emotions shown was brought by the typhoon
which had made an impact for him to be emotional while speaking. When a person is genuinely
moved to speak and to call upon his brothers and sisters in God to work together in love and
service for all, it can be heard in his voice. Mr. Saño speaks with emphases and cadence who
most certainly is, in Spirit, standing at this gentleman's side.
