Activity 2- Module 2 (Intro to Pragmatics Class)

1.What is the relevance of the Speech Act Theory in the study of Pragmatics?
-Speech act theory is relevant for us to be able to understand easily. According to JL
Austin, to speak is to act and that is true sometimes even if it does not include a lot of
words we tend to understand the meaning and the message someone wants to deliver
that is because some words plus the way a person acts corelates to each other and so
we are receiving the accurate message.

2.Are the Filipinos fond of performatives? Why do you think so or why not?
-Yes, I think that Filipinos are fond of performatives simply because we have very
expressive language. We even have ‘po’ and ‘opo’ that symbolizes respect to elders
and that we tend to say everything in words to express ourselves.

3.Differentiate constatives from performatives. Pls give 2 examples of constatives and 2

for performatives.
-Constatives are certain utterances that does not denote any action, they do not have
performative word. Performatives in the other hand, actually describes the act that it
performs.

The video/situation should just be done inside your house so we are sure that you are
safe. Please make sure that the video will run using the VLC media player so it would
be easier to play.
