What is SIMPLE PAST TENSE?

 It is the basic form of the past tense of the verb.

Forming the simple past

● If dealing with a regular verb, the simple past tense is formed like this:

Base form of the verb + ed

Jump = Jumped
Paint= painted

● If dealing with an irregular verb, the simple past tense is formed in all sorts of different ways.
Break = Broke
Catch = Caught
Find = Found
See = saw

 We can use SIMPLE PAST TENSE when we talk about actions that happened at a
specific time in the past. There can be a few actions happening one after another.
 These can be in terms of events in the past that are now finished or a series of actions in
the past.

Example:
1. I came, I saw, I conquered.
2. I once lived in Boracay.
3. Anna surpassed her silent battles alone.

What is PAST PERFECT TENSE?

 Past Perfect tense is formed using the word “had” followed by past participle.

Past participle – are used as adjectives

 A sentence that uses the past perfect tenses provides two actions in the past wherein the
first past action, condition or situation is completed ahead of another past action.

Example:
1. After Catelyn had eaten her breakfast, she washed the dishes.
2. As soon as Juan had submitted his assignment, the teacher left the
Classroom.

 In many cases, a complete sentence is written in two parts with two different tenses: past
perfect tense to refer the action that happened first or earlier and past simple to refer the
action that happened second or later.
