Research Projects
Project Title / Focus activity Achievements
Development of a customizable 3D 3D hydrodynamic model, including the effects of baroclinicity, tides, wind, temperature, salinity,
numerical Hydrodynamics and Siltation sediment generation/ siltation in estuaries, waterways and coasts. This is similar and also will replace
tool. the MIKE or DELFT3D that is widely being used in Ports and Waterways.

Project Title / Focus activity Achievements
Demonstration of Dragflow Dredger for Silt The construction of dragflow dredger was built to work in harsh environment where normal conventional
trap & Shoal Dredging dredger cannot operate. The advanced design which includes agitators, hydraulic cutters and pressure
compensation equipment, allows for high efficiency dredging.

Impact of Navigation on Flow and • Improved navigation (better operational safety of vessels) at the confluence of two rivers through better
Sediment Transport at River Confluences: understanding of hydrodynamics, mixing processes and sediment transport; effect of vanes (or piles).
An Experimental Study • Identification of potential bank failures due to waves at the confluence of navigable rivers. Improvement of
river bed and bank protection designs at the confluences for existing as well as newly proposed 106
Dr. Venu Chandra National Waterways.
• Improvement of the existing guidelines for installation of vanes or piles to control confluence scour.
Dept. of Civil Engg.
New Concepts of Pile Supported • Increase in the maritime trade due to implantation of Sagarmala, there is a continuous need for
Breakwater With Berthing Facility development for deep water berthing facility combined with satisfactory tranquil conditions.
• Due to the limitations in extension of conventional rubble mound breakwaters, the immediate task of the
Dr. Sannasiraj research community is to develop deep water berthing cum breakwater concepts.
• Piled breakwaters are a possible concept being researched by many.
Dept. of Ocean Engg. • Breakwaters for relatively deeper waters should be stable in order to ensure safety and with a minimum
foot print in the Ocean floor, minimum or no wave over-topping but still maintaining the crest elevation as
low as possible.
• This may possibly be achieved by reshaping the shape of the sea front structure in such a way that it
offers maximum resistance to the waves or enhances the dissipation of incident wave energy.
Controllability Of Ships In Harbour and • Ship control is much more critical in restricted and shallow waters, given the risk of lack of control on ship
Navigational Channels and subsequent collision.
• It is very important to study the manoeuvring characteristics of ships in water regions such as harbour,
Dr. P. Krishnankutty ports etc., which are shallow regions. IMO ship manoeuvring criteria covers only deep water conditions.
• Rules and regulations should be in place as early as possible to control vessel operation in shallow and
Dept. of Ocean Engg. restricted waters to minimise the collision chances and subsequent harbour/marine pollution.
• The project provides the manoeuvring characteristics of ships in shallow and restricted operating
conditions.

Technology Development and • In Inland vessels, 80% of fuel is spent in overcoming water friction. Minimizing this friction will
Demonstration of Micro Bubble Drag save enormous amount of fuel and increase environmental compliance.
Reduction (MBDR) and manoeuvring of • Latest developments suggest that (MBDR) could be employed to reduce upto 30% of friction in
vessels in Inland Water Transportation ships.
• The present development suit the needs of Inland and coastal vessels in India.
