Question: Nowadays people waste a lot of food that was bought from shops and restaurants. Why do you
think people waste food? What can be done to reduce the amount of food they throw away?
It is true that people today throw away a massive amount of food waste. While mass production of food and
lack of awareness could be ascribed to this phenomenon, some policies can be adopted by the government to
combat this pressing issue.
There are several reasons why people discard more food today. One of the most obvious reason would be
the overproduction of food which happens in every corner of the world. As food manufactuers have been
expanding their capacites and applying advanced technologies to boots their producing productivity, they
can be able to produce high volume of products in short time. Consequently, people can buy large amount of
food in low cost without regard to their real need. Secondly, the absence of proper regulations also
contributes to this eating habit. Since no one tell consumers about the damaging impact of diposing food,
they keep buying more food than enough and throw them away. This has became an ingrained eating habit
that people overlook its consequences.
However, some regulations can be applied by the government to solve the problem. Firstly, food
manufactuers should shift their focus from producing high volume of products to producing food with
higher quality with higher cost. This can make buyers consider more when they buy foods from groceries
and restaurants which certainly will decrease the amount of food waste in landfills. Additionally, the
government also need to take the responsibility by running campaigns to raise residents’ awareness. If
people are informed about the damaging impact of food wasting, they may find some prorable solution to
adjust their eating habit and find the way to recycle excessive food stuffs instead of throw them away.
In conclusion, food wasting is an urgent problem today in many countries which resulted from mass
production and bad eating habits. However, if both manufactuer and the government take immediate action,
the problem can be effectively addressed.
