BEFORE DISCUSSING

In our literature review, we chose only ten articles, dating from the year 2017 to the year 2020,
that are most relevant to our study from the 15 articles that we reviewed. For our search, we
used Google Scholar. We used keywords such as social media on academic performance.

MY PART (LAST 2 PARAGRAPHS OF RRL)

Talue et al. stated that social media had become a part of a student’s daily life. The results of
the 2018 study Kolana and Dzandza conducted supported this claim. The results showed that
most students use social media for at least 2 hours. In addition to the previously mentioned
studies about how students use social media, research by Abas et al. reveals that, generally,
social media has already been a part of how students make decisions. Social media can be
beneficial to academic performance if it is used with limits and boundaries. The study by
Giunchiglia et al. suggested that having a controlled and right use of social media is much more
informative and may improve the students’ academic performance.

If there are positive effects, there must also be some negative effects. Azizi, Soroush, and
Khatony stated that social media is a factor affecting students’ academic performance. Tan et al.
also investigated the negative effects of social media on the academic performance of students.
The results revealed that social media has been:
1. A distraction, which caused the students’ attention span to greatly shorten;
2. A reason for demotivation;
3. And, a stressor.
Their study shows that the academic performance of students is greatly affected due to constant
procrastination, lack of sleep, and struggles in remote learning; all caused by their excessive
use of social media.
