1. i) Suppose two generators supplying a load. Generator-1 has a no-load frequency of 61.5 Hz and a
slope sp1 of 1 MW/Hz. Generator-2 has a no-load frequency of 62 Hz and a slope sp2 of 1MW/Hz.
The two generators are supplying a real load totaling 2.5 MW at 0.8 PF lagging. Draw the resulting
system power-frequency or house-diagrams. Determine (a) at what frequency is the system operating,
and how much power is supplied by each of the generators? (b) if an additional 0.75-MW load were
attached to this power system. What would the new system frequency be, and how much power
would the each generator supply now? (c) with the system in the configuration described in part (b),
what will the system frequency and generators power be if the governor set points on generator-1 are
increased by 0.5 Hz? (Marks: 3+(3X3)=12)

ii) Why oncoming generator’s frequency needs to be slightly higher than running system frequency in
case of alternators’ parallel operation. Explain with house diagram.

(Marks: 8)

2. i) A 480V, 50Hz, Y-connected, six-pole synchronous generator has a per-phase reactance of 1.0 Ω. Its
full load armature current is 60A at 0.8PF lagging. The generator has friction and windage losses of
1.5kW and core losses 1.0kW at 60Hz at full load. Since the armature resistance is ignored, assume
that the copper losses are negligible. The field current is adjusted such that the terminal voltage is
480V at no load. Draw the phasor diagram of the armature.
(a) What is the speed of rotation of this generator?
(b) What is the terminal voltage of this generator if it is loaded with the rated current 0.8PF leading?
(c) What is the efficiency of the generator at rated current and 0.8 PF leading?
(d) How much shaft torque must be applied by the prime mover at full load? How large the induced
counter torque? (Marks: 2+4*2.5=12)
ii) What is the V-curve of a synchronous motor? Explain the operation of a synchronous motor at
leading power factor.
(Marks: 8)
3. (i) What is Amortesseur winding? How does it help to start a synchronous motor?
(Marks: 8)
(ii) Assuming that a load contains a synchronous motor (whose PF can be adjusted) in addition to
motors of other types. What does the ability to set the PF of one of the loads do for the power system?
Let us consider a large power system operating at 480 V. Load 1 is an induction motor consuming
100 kW at 0.78 PF lagging, and load 2 is an induction motor consuming 200 kW at 0.8 PF lagging.
Load 3 is a synchronous motor whose real power consumption is 150 kW.
a. If the synchronous motor is adjusted to 0.85 PF lagging, what is the line current?
b. If the synchronous motor is adjusted to 0.85 PF leading, what is the line current?
c. Assuming that the line losses are PLL = 3IL2RL, how do these losses compare in the two cases?
