Question 1 Answer in brief [1 x 6 =6]
1.1 Why the rotor slots, of a 3 phase induction motor are skewed?
1.2 Why do you require starters for starting a 3 phase induction motors?
1.3 Why is primary winding in Schrage motor provided on its rotor and
secondary on stator?
1.4 Explain the condition required for parallel operation of alternators?
1.5 How is the starting winding disconnected when single phase
induction motor runs upto rated speed?
1.6 What is meant by hunting in synchronous motor?

Question 2 [4, 4]
2.1 A three phase star connected alternator is rated at 1800 kVA, 11kV.
The armature effective resistance and synchronous reactor are 1.4Ω
and 28Ω respectively per phase. Calculate the percentage regulation
for a load of 1250 kW at p.f 0.8 lag.

2.2 A 3-phase synchronous generator is delivering a power of 0.9 p.u to

an infinite bus at rated voltage and at p.f 0.8 lagging. The generator
has X d = 1.0 p.u and X q =0.6 p.u. Determine the load angle and
excitation voltage. Incase loss of the excitation takes place, will the
generator remain in synchronism?

Question 3 [4, 6]
3.1 Explain the atleast eight (8) merits of Induction motor

3.2 A 3-phase, 50Hz induction motor has a full load speed of 1440
r.p.m. For this motor, calculate the following: (a) Number of poles.
(b) Full-load slip and rotor frequency, (c) Speed of the stator field
with respect to (i) Stator structure and (ii) Rotor structure, (d)
Speed of rotor field with respect to (i) Rotor structure, (ii) Stator
structure and (iii) Stator field

Question 4 [4, 7]
4.1 How does a synchronous motor differ from a 3 phase induction
motor?

4.2 A 3-phase, 400 V, 50 Hz star-connected induction motor gave

the following test results:
No load: 400 V, 7.5 A, 0.135 pf
Blocked rotor: 150 V, 35 A, 0.44 pf
The ratio of standstill leakage reactance of stator and rotor is
estimated as 2. If the motor is running at a speed of 960 rpm,
determine; Net mechanical power output, the net torque and
efficiency of the motor.
Assume stator and rotor copper losses to be equal.

Question 5 [3, 5]
5.1 State atleast six (6) advantages of linear induction motor.

5.2 A factory has an average load of 300 kW at a p.f. of 0.6 lagging.

A synchronous motor, with an efficiency of 88%, is used to raise
the combined p.f. to 0.90 lagging and at the same time supply a
mechanical load of 60 kW. Calculate (a) total load kVA, (b) kVA
capacity of the synchronous motor and (c) synchronous motor
operating power factor.

Question No.6 [2, 5]

6.1 Briefly explain the needs of operating alternators in parallel.

6.2 Two 50-MVA, 3 phase alternators operate in parallel. The settings

of the governors are such that the rise in speed from full load to no
load is 2 percent in one machine and 3 percent in the other, the
characteristic being the straight line in both cases. If each machine
is fully loaded when the total load is 80 MW, What would be the
load on each machine when the total load is 50MW?
