Lab 4
PBL Module 1
Design of 1st Order Analog Filters
Tools
• Trainer Board
• Resistors
• Amplifiers
• Multimeter
• Simulink – MATLAB

Problem Statement
Hospitals are one of the most electrically noisy environments a sensor will have to work in, with
hundreds of wireless devices running nearby and the ever present 60 cycle hums from lights and
mains. These erratic noise signals are often orders of magnitude larger than the signal from a
biopotential electrode, which itself will only be a few millivolts. As an instrumentation engineer, filter
and monitor the changes in the heart’s dipole electric field.

Lab Requirements
To solve the above-mentioned problem, comply with the given points.

• Brainstorming
• Analysing the problem
• Formulating the learning goals
• Self-Study
• Reporting
Examine your lab rubrics to gain a better understanding of these points. Practice tasks will
help you to find the solution. Prepare a concise report incorporating the aforementioned
points after implementing the solution.

Practice Tasks
Task 1: Design a low pass filter by using MATLAB filter designer toolbox to remove noise from given
signal.

Task 2: Design a high pass filter by using MATLAB filter designer toolbox to acquire noise from given
signal.

Home Tasks
Complete and show the remaining/home tasks and activities (if any) before coming to the
next lab.
