Moisture Measurement in the soil.
I. Introduction

One of the most important criteria for determining the strength of soil
is its moisture content. The strength of the underlying soil must be considered
when designing any structure and its foundation. This strength is measured
by test results and is strongly reliant on moisture content. The monitoring of
soil moisture has a very explicit and immediate use. It enables the
quantification of irrigation requirements prior to the onset of crop distress.
Knowing the soil moisture condition allows for highly effective irrigation,
supplying the water as and when needed and preventing the wasteful use of
water when irrigation is not required. Moisture content is known as the
amount of water in the soil, it also affects the permittivity of the soil.
Precipitation output and weather pattern development are dependent for soil
moisture. Schedules for irrigation must take into account soil moisture
measurements. The amount of water in the soil can be measured, and this
information can be used to calculate the soil's moisture content. Ecology,
agriculture, and engineering all rely heavily on soil moisture.
Both indirect and direct approaches can be used to measure the soil's
moisture content. The real water content in the soil is determined using direct
methods, which entail the use of sensors including feel and appearance,
gravimetric, volumetric, and moisture meters or probes. The temperature of
the soil is measured indirectly using the tensiometer, volumetric, and
dielectric sensors to calculate its moisture content.
