Final Activity 3: "Whene'er I look Into Thine Eyes"

Question: What is the meaning of the statement “I love thee!” and the man’s reaction: “Then I
must weep, and bitterly.”
When the girl says “I love thee”, it has a very deep meaning since she is saying her long-
kept feelings to the man she loves wholeheartedly. This three-word sentence, although short, wraps
a sea of emotions which made it so difficult to say especially on the person she dearly adores. It is
a way of letting her man know that he is her treasure and that he means the world to her. The line
simply means “I love you”. When two humans have a mutual affection for each other, those three
words is like the sweet fruit formed by the feelings which dwell within them.
The man’s reaction “Then must I weep, and bitterly”, at first glance seems like a negative
thing. But interpreting it based on how he feels on hearing something sweet like that from his
beloved means that the man has a strong feeling just like a bitter taste that we cannot comprehend.
It means that he expresses the flood of emotions by shedding tears. In short, to “weep” means he
is crying from joy. Additionally, although the use of the word “bitterly” sounds like an unsweet
response to a positive statement, I think that it perfectly complements the indescribable feeling
that a man has upon hearing “I love you” from the girl he loves.
