Q1- if 3 kw is conducted through a section of insulating material 0.6m 2 in

cross section and 2.5 thick and thermal coductivity may be taken as

0.2 w/m.c. , Compute the temperature difference across the material.

Q2-A temperature difference of 85 c is impressed across a fiberglass

layer of 13 cm thickness.(k) of the fiberglass is 0.035 w/m.c. ,

find the heat transfer through the material per hour per unit area.

Q3-A 5 cm layer of loosely packed asbestos is placed between two

plates at 100c and 200c. Calculate the heat transfer across the layer.

Q4-A certain insulation has a thermal conductivity of 10 w/m.c.

What thickness is necessary to effect a temperature drop of 500c to

Q5- A flat wall is exposed to to an envireonmental temperature of 38c

w/m.c. and the temperature of wall on the inside of insulation is

315c. The wall losses heat to the envireonment by convection.

Compute the value of the convection heat transfer coefficient which

must be maintained on the outer surface of insulation to ensure the

outer surface temperature does not exceed 41c.

Q6-Two perfectly black surfaces are constructed so that all the radiant

energy leaving a surface at 800c reaches the other surface. The

temperature of the other surface is maintained at 250c. Calculate

the heat transfer between the surfaces per hour and per unit area
of the surface maintained at 800c.

Q7-If the radiant heat flux from the sun is 1350 w/m2, what would be

the equivalent blackbody temperature .

Q8-A 5cm diameter cylinder is heated to a temperature of 200c,and air

at 30c is forced across it at a velocity of 50 m/s. If the surface

emissivity is 0.7, Calculate the total heat loss per unit length if the

walls of the enclosing room are at 10c.

Q9-In a certain experiment,cylinder samples of diameter of 5 cm and

length of 10 cm are used.Two thermocouples in each sample are

placed 3 cm apart. After initial transient ,the electric heater is

observed to read 0.4 A at 110 v,and both differntial thermometers

read a temperature difference of 15c.Determine the thermal

conductivity of the material

Q10-A 2.0m long ,0.3 cm diameter electricial wire extend across a room

At 15c,heat is generated in the wire as a result of resistence

heating and the surface temperature of the wire is measured to be

152c in steady operation,the voltage drop and electric current is

meaured to be 60v and 1.5A .Determine the heat transfer

coefficient between the outer surface of the wire and the air in the

room (neglet radiation effects)

Q11-Consider a person in a room at 22c maintained all times, the inner

surface of the room every where is 10c in winter and 25c in

summer.Determine the rate of radiation heat transfer between the


person and the surrounding surfaces if the exposed surface area is

1.4m2 and outer surface temperature of the person is 30c.

Q12-Consider a person in a room at 20c. Determine the total rate of

heat transfer from the person if the exposed surface area and the

average outer surface temperature of the person are 1.6m 2 and 29c

respectivily and the heat transfer coefficient is (h=6 w/m2).

Q13-Two large parallel plates at constant temerapure 300k and 200k

that are 1 cm apart. If the surfaces are black .determine the rate of

heat transfer per unit surface area assuming the gap between the

plates is(a)-filled with atmospheric air(k=0.0219 w/mk).
