In line with their Constructivist influencers, Bauhaus furniture emphasized the materiality of the furniture without added expression. The basic elements of fur-
niture are foregrounded. They used steel, glass, plywood, and plastics to emphasize base materials and to take advantage of their efficiency, which was of great
importance to the Bauhaus emphasis on practicality and the ability to mass-produce using industrial techniques. The formal elements of Bauhaus furniture include
minimizing the visual weight and lines of the pieces, resisting ornamentation, and exposing the chrome and steel frames of the chairs as a way of revealing the
structure and process that made the chair.
Principles of Bauhaus
* Truth to materials.
* Form follows function.
* Less is more.
Scandinavian Furniture
Scandinavian design is a design movement characterized by simplicity, minimalism and functionality that emerged in the early 20th century, and subsequently
flourished in the 1950s throughout the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland.
Scandinavian designers are known especially for household goods including furniture, textiles, ceramics, lamps, and glass, but Scandinavian design has been extended to industrial
design such as of consumer electronics, mobile phones, and cars.
