Planning for the season Graham Henry

• 24 MINS 16 SEC • 8 COURSES
As coaches we need to place a lot of importance on the off the field side of things. I think this part of rugby is hugely important, if you can
get it right, your team can play to it’s potential. The off field planning that goes into a team, helps to ensure success of that team on the
field.
It’s about people, not just about you - the coach. It’s about the whole group, players, coaches and management becoming one. To
achieve this, you need to select the right people, the best people you can get hold of, this will help you to “coach” your team.
No matter what level you’re coaching, you need to identify the leaders in your team. You don’t play the game, so you need people on the
field who can run the game the way you want it run.

Graham’s notes: Your notes:
Warm up - game based
activities important
Individual skill activities
Team / unit skills
Yours and the opposition patterns
Practice plan is clear on time,
who and what.

I can’t emphasize enough, the need for the coach to set the expectation by the way they
DON’T FORGET: conduct themselves. Their energy, emotion and body language, they are responsible,
that’s where the buck stops.

If you can get your player leaders and coaches doing the same thing, you will have a
strong unit. So who are your player leaders, who is the coaching team to best help you
achieve this?

Planning is critical, you wont be 100% out on the field unless you get your planning right
and get the people connected strongly. Cood luck!
