Question 1. Air at 20C at atmospheric pressure flows over a flat plate at a velocity of 3 m/s. if
the plate is 1 m wide and 80C, calculate the following at x = 300 mm.

a) Hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness,

b) Thermal boundary layer thickness,
c) Local friction coefficient,
d) Average friction coefficient,
e) Local heat transfer coefficient

Question 3. For air flow over a bank of tubes to cool down water flow inside pipe

(a) Determine the maximum velocity

(b) Find the convection heat transfer coefficient for the information given below.

(c) Determine the heat transfer rate per unit length

(c) Calculate the pressure drop across the banks of tubes.

(Perform at least two iterations if the result is not approximate in the first iteration)

Question 4. A copper ball of diameter D=12 cm is removed from the heat environment at a uniform
temperature of 300°C. The ball is then subjected to the flow of air at 1 atm pressure and 30°C with
a velocity of 6 m/s. The surface temperature of the ball eventually drops to 200°C. Determine the
average convection heat transfer coefficient and the average heat transfer during this cooling
process. The average surface temperature is (300+200)/2= 250 oC. The properties of air may be
evaluated at 30 oC and 1 atm (please refer to the tables given in the end pages of the book).
