NUMERICALS

NUMERICAL:1
For the impulse commutated thyristor circuit shown, determine the available turn
off time of thyristor T1 if 𝑉 = 100𝑉, 𝑅 = 10𝛺, 𝐶 = 10𝜇𝐹, 𝑉𝑐(0‾) = −100𝑉.
SOLUTION:
To calculate turn off time we discuss mode 3 where capacitor voltage changes
from Vs to 0.
1
𝑡 = −𝑅𝐶 ln( )
2
1
𝑡 = −(10)(10𝜇) ln( )
2
𝑡 = 69.3𝜇 𝑠𝑒𝑐

NUMERICAL:2
The circuit shown illustrates impulse commutation. For this circuit 𝑉𝑠 =
230𝑉, 𝐿 = 20𝜇𝐻 and 𝐶 = 40𝜇𝐹. For a constant load current of 120A, calculate.

(a) Peak value of current through capacitance and also through main and
auxiliary thyristors,
(b) Circuit turn-off time for main and auxiliary thyristors.
(c) Effective Turn on time of chopper.
(d) Commutation interval.
SOLUTION:
(a) Peak value of current through capacitor

𝐶 40
𝐼 =𝑉 = 230 = 325.22𝐴
𝐿 20

Peak value of current through main thyristor

𝐼 =𝐼 +𝐼
𝐼 = 325.22 + 120 = 445.22𝐴
Peak value of current through auxiliary thyristor
𝐼 = 𝐼 = 120𝐴
(b) Circuit turn off time for main thyristor
𝑉
𝑡 =𝐶
𝐼

𝑡 = 40 × 10 = 76.67𝜇𝑠
Circuit turn off time for auxiliary thyristor

1 10 10
𝑤 = = =
√𝐿𝐶 √20 × 40 √800

𝜋 𝜋√800
𝑡 = = = 44.43𝜇𝑠
2𝑤 2 × 10
(c) Effective Turn on time of chopper
𝑡 = 2𝑡 + 2𝑡
𝑡 = 2(44.43) + 2(76.67)
𝑡 = 242.2𝜇𝑠
(d) Commutation interval = 2𝑡
= 2(76.67)
= 153.34𝜇𝑠

COMMUTATION INTERVAL:
Time taken to disconnect the load from the supply after the main thyristor
stops conducting.
EFFECTIVE TURN-ON TIME:
