Thomas Edison’s brilliant career as an inventor started when he was just a young boy. He had been at
school for only three months when his teacher declared that eight-year old thomas was addled’’ (cofused). His
mother decided toteach him at home and gave him a science book which described a variety chemistry
experiments When he had carried out every experiment in the book, he built a science laboratory in the
basement, la beligall his bettes ‘’poisson’’.
At the age of 12, young Thomas got his first job. Serving news papers, food and drinks on a train, but
whenever he had a moment, he carried on with his experiments inthe baggage compartment. Unfortunately,
during one of these experiments. He accidentally set fire to the compartment and he lost his job.
In 1863 he became a telegraph assistant in Canada. His job was to report to Toronto very hour by
telegraph. Thomas thought this was a waste of time so he invented a gadget that sent a signal automatically,
even if he was asleepo ! This was his first real invention but his boss found him asleep on the job and he nearly
lost his job agin !
By the age of twenty-two. Edison had become a full-time inventor. In 1882, only three years after he had
invented the light bulb. The first Central Power Station in New York was built to bring electric light to city
streets and homes. By 1889 he had formed his company, the ‘’Edison General Electric Company’’ by 1913 he
had combinet his ‘’phongraph’’ and ‘’kinetoscope’’ to produce the first talfing ‘’move’’.
During his lifetime Edison took out a record number of 1,093 patents, and it is often said that he
‘’invented’’ the 20th century. At the time of his birth, many scientists had already experimented electricity, but
no one had been able to do anything very useful with it. At his death, his electrical inventions had changed life
not only in America but also in all corners of the world. On the day of his funeral. Lights were turned down at
10 pm all over the United States in his honour.

Text : Getting safe water
Getting water has always been a big task for most families. But getting enough water is not the
only problem. In many places the real problem is getting water that is safe to drink. A stream may look
clear and sparkling, but it may not be safe. In these conditions people should first learn about basic
rules of hygiene. I mean every man, woman and child should know and always observe those rules of
hygiène. Secondly, they must have enough safe water and thirdly, they must have toilets in their
houses. Contaminated water is to blame for a lot of illnesses. It causes diarrhea, cholera and typhoid.
Dirty water also spreads diseases caused by parasites, such as bilharzia and guinea worm, many other
illnesses, too. So people get these illnesses if they don’t know about personal hygiene, don’t have
enough water for washing and have toilets at home. The WHO (World Health Organization) estimates
that these factors combine to kill over 12 million people a year worldwide. So learning about hygiène
is the most important thing. One of the rules I learned as a child was to wash my hands after using the
toilets and before touching foods. Such simple precautions can prevent a lot of sicknesses. But you do
need to have enough water if personal hygiene is to become a habit and not just a luxury. How can
people obtain safe, uncontaminated water ?
The easiest way is to make safe an existing source of water , such as spring. Most natural
springs are found at the bottom of hillsides or river valleys. How does the water get there ? Rainwater
falls on the surface and sinks through the earth, sand and stones, which act as natural filters.
Eventually, the water reaches an impervious layer of rock or clay. So it comes out at the surface as a
spring. Such water is usually safe. People must make sure that nothing dirty enters the spring water. In
some countries women are trained to look after community water supplies.
But not all well water is safe. If there is no way around well, contaminated water can run into it,
especially if it is too close to latrines or rubbish dumps. There is always the additional risk of children
throwing things in or animals falling in.
If unfortunately you have no choice, you have to drink water that may not be safe, boil the water
thoroughly. If there is very little or fuel to boil it, do not waste water that has been used to boil
vegetables. I have been told that rice water, if not too salty, is very good for drinking, particularly if
you have diarrhea.
