Treatment of sick persons has gone far beyond a “one-man show” due to the dynamism of the

medical profession. The dynamism of the medical profession is to ensure that patients have the
advantage of enjoying the maximum possible care in any health facility for their survival. It
further needs no gainsaying that Biomedical Scientists play a significant role in achieving this.

In my early days as an uncertain young mind in a low income society, my career journey into the
world of biomedical science has not exactly been a smooth one as it took cooperate loans to fund
my tertiary education in a private institution due to the unreliable and dilapidated state of public
institutions in my country. This decadence is also evident in my country’s health care sector as it
is almost impossible to get access to modern day health care facilities especially coming from a
low income background like mine which in turn leads to an increased mortality rate. This
intensified my passion for excellence as I could not afford to disappoint my parents and society at
large.

In the course of obtaining my bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science, I was introduced
to learning the various laboratory disciplines such as clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology,
immunohematology, microbiology, and molecular biology. I was also introduced to the use of
sophisticated biomedical instrumentation, technology and methods requiring manual dexterity to
perform laboratory testing on blood and body fluids which is a necessity in the diagnosis,
treatment and monitoring of medical conditions. I have over time acquired basic transferrable
skills under the profession. I have imbibed the art of communicating effectively with a sound
intellect and interest in science and technology. To skillfully perform and analyze tests, I have
imbibed excellent eye-hand coordination, dexterity, and visual acuity.

My particular interest in biomedical science is fueled by my curiosity in knowing how exactly the
body system works in relation to disease and pathological conditions. My interest is also fueled
by compassion as I want to develop my knowledge and skill in patient care and delivery so as to
contribute to providing affordable health care for low income earners in societies like where I
come from. I believe that earning my Masters Degree at the University of East London in this high
demand field of Biomedical Science is a smart investment in my future which will broaden my
horizon in patients’ care and delivery.

I have gone through the academic opportunities in the USA, Germany, and Australia, I feel
confident of the choices of universities and teaching standards that the UK provides. Not that the
other countries do not have a record for excellent standards, but, the UK is the closest country to
call home outside my home country Nigeria. And, seeing that I can get the same and even better
experience in the UK, I feel more confident studying in the UK.
I have chosen the University of East London because its teaching is research-informed. With
collaboration and partnership with industry networks, and teaching staff that are research-active,
I trust the knowledge that I would gain during my study. For me, I am focused on getting
informed knowledge that will serve me in this current fast-paced economy, and not just generally
recycled information.

And after going through the modules of the University of East London, I have the assurance of
getting the desired experience that I seek.
