Experiment # 1 & 2 Water Purification & Improvised Centrifuge (paperfuge)

Name: De Lina, Juliana Faye Date accomplished: Nov 18, 2022

Instructions. Kindly follow all the given instructions below. You can
make your own creative lay-out for this output; but please submit in
pdf format. For the paper centrifuge, you may conduct the experiment
by yourself (solo)/ by pair/ by a group of 3 members; but the first 2
experiments shall be conducted individually. Have fun, class!
Don’t hesitate to chat/ ask for guidance from your Instructor
whenever needed.

I. Introduction.

Minerals like salt & other substances dissolved in water are

left behind. As a result, when the water vapor condenses to become
water again, it is relatively pure. The evaporation and condensation
are the key terms that help water purifying. While these processes
occur during the water cycle, it can also be used to purify water for
drinking or industry use. Water is always moving. The movement is
driven by the energy of the sun and the force of the gravity.

On the other hand, centrifugation is a process that uses

centrifugal force to separate any type of fluid component. A
centrifugation requires a high-speed spinning of the container
containing the fluid in order for a solid to separate from the
liquid. Speed is important in this method because it is one of the
reasons that mixtures are separated. Here are simple experiments that
you can do at home. They will help you understand how the water cycle
& the process of centrifugation help to purify water.

*For the making/creation of paper centrifuge, you can also search for other videos on
YouTube that show/s or discuss/es the step-by-step procedure like

*For the materials that are not readily available in your respective homes, you may
also use other materials/alternatives that could also serve the same purpose.

III. Documentation
A. For the Procedures
Per experiment, at least 5 pictures each. You, yourself/ the members
of the group, should be included in the pictures (at least 50% of the
pics). You may ask somebody to take pictures while you conduct each
experiment. Include a figure title per each photo.

IV. What did you learn from the set of experiments that you have
conducted? (at least 150 words; 50 words per experiment)

In experiment 1, I learned that because ice cools the pan lid,

condensation occurs more quickly. This indicates that the steam cools
and condenses back into water when it contacts the lid. Since
steam/water vapor is simply water that has boiled above its freezing
point, it reverts to water when it cools. In experiment 2, I learned
how a dirty water can turn into a clean one. This water purification
can remove all the unnecessary bacteria and viruses from the water
that is hazardous for our health. It may also improve the flavor and
appearance of water and removes the unpleasant odor. In experiment 3,
I learned that you can separate molecules having different densities
by spinning them in solution at a high speed. I also found out that
this is used to separate particles suspended in a liquid based on the
size, density, and viscosity of the particles, as well as the speed
of the rotor. Gravitational forces within a solution cause particles
with densities greater than the solvent to sink and those with
densities less than the solvent to float to the top.

V. Remarks about the whole activity. (2 complete sentences.)

Doing these experiments will help us develop our resourcefulness

particularly their skills at goal-setting, planning, and problem-
solving. It will also nurture our intellectual curiosity in acquiring
new ways of asking questions and understanding the world.
