LEADERSHIP TRAIT AND CHARACTER

Riduan Muhamad Arifin as Head of Technical Services of Malindo Air, he is

answerable for making department-wide decisions, establishing plans and goals that results
in success to the department. With his knowledge and expertise, he manages to take care
and control his team to a better path. For Riduan Muhamad Arifin, his self-confidence,
adaptability, and tolerance for stress are best to describe his leadership style.

Based on my observation, the abilities that contribute to his success is his self-
confidence. To be a leader, one must have self-confidence. A leader with self-confidence
thinks positively and is willing to take necessary risk (Lolly Daskal, 2019). For instance, when
we are facing difficulties for some task, we will definitely refer to him as he always gives a very
convincing view. When in discussion or meeting, he always came prepared.

Other than that, it is his adaptability. We might not be working with people with the
same interest as us, but being able to adapt to the situation would be an advantage to us (Eric
Friedman, 2013). Riduan can adapt and blend in smoothly with anyone and in any situation
he is in. For the role he held, it required him to meet many people and deal with a lot of
individuals. Bound by that requirement, Riduan has to better understand how to manage his
team by having a knowledge on how to motivate them, provide guidance to achieve and
complete a task given to them. This can be seen for some cases, when there’s an accident
on an aircraft, most of his time with his subordinates are spent together working. He will make
sure the team will be updating him on their progress.

Last but not least, he is well-known for his high tolerance of stress. Riduan is a calm
person. For the role he held, he has taken a lot of pressure from many sides. For example,
back in 2019, there was one case of Malindo Aircraft that crashed with the baggage
transport. This accident has cost Malindo Air a billion ringgit to do the repair. Riduan is the
responsible person to prepare the paperwork for the repair. He has to deal with a lot of people
and departments. This incident has taken a lot of his time, most of his time spent on working
for the paperwork. And based on my observation, and working as his assistant, he never once
lash out. He knew what to do and dealt with it in a calm way.

LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOUR

For as long as knowing Riduan, he is the closest to a relationship-oriented style kind

of person. Jones and George (2019) stated behaviour basically is concerned with developing
good relations with their subordinates and being liked by them. This is the best way to
describe Riduan Muhamad Arifin. He believes that a good relationship with subordinates will
encourage them to work better whether with tasks or people. He has a good relation not
only within the organisation but also with the authorities and vendors. For example, he will
reward his subordinates when they have achieved or accomplish a task successfully. Other
than that, to keep the good relation, he will spend his time having lunch with us most of the
time. As has been said by Jonathan Sandling (2014), if a leader fails to have a clear
understanding of the needs, interests and abilities of their staff, they will never succeed.

In some situations, he will be seen as a task-oriented style leader. Because in some

situations, most in stress and serious situations, he will need to act like one. This can be seen
when we need to prepare for the paperwork to establish our department by Civil Aviation
Authority Malaysia (CAAM). He will ask all of us to get the job done within the time given and
give our best to it. This style is successful as we have achieved the goal to become an
independent department.

LEADERSHIP POWER

For Riduan, he has the expert and reward power. Expert power can be proven by his
knowledge and experience throughout his year of being a leader. With 20 years of experience,
his experiences and expertise is well known among the organisation. He is expert on the
aircraft maintenance and also documentation that mostly needed to be submitted to the
authorities. Most of the tasks given to them will be guided by Riduan. His wide experience
has led him to be who he is today. He generously will share his knowledge and experience
with others without hoping for anything in return.

Second, the power of reward. It is the ability of a manager to give or withhold tangible
and intangible rewards. Reward can be in any form. For example, Riduan will reward his
subordinates every time they manage to accomplish the task given to them whether to buy
them lunch or compliment their good job. This will help or encourage them to work harder and
better in the future. The result is everyone in the team is happy working as a team. As a
leader, he never fails to reward us whenever he can.

CONCLUSION

Being a leader is no easy task. To be a leader nowadays, they must realize the
managerial roles and skills are very crucial in this competitive world. Working with Riduan
makes me realize how good he is as a leader. He has the leadership characteristic that is
required to be a great leader. His calm personality made us not hesitate to ask for his opinion
or guidance whenever we needed to. His wide experience and knowledge ate the main
reason he is reliable.

With leadership style and approach, it is a form of cooperation to the team and work it
seems reliable to the subordinates and as a motivation to them. Serving a leader, you are a
form of model to the followers to follow and inspired by. Leader is someone that inspires
people to do the right thing.

Having to study about Riduan Muhamad Arifin, we got better and clearer to understand
that it takes a long bumpy road to be a good leader. He shows us with examples of what
leadership characteristic is, and what it takes to be a great leader. Being accepted, inspired
and close to the team is what it takes to be a good leader. To set a clear goal on what to
achieve and how to achieve. I believe a leadership characteristic is a person born with it.
