TOPIC;- ASSERTIVENESS

OBJECTIVE:-

1. Define assertiveness
2. Distinguish between assertiveness, aggressiveness, passiveness and manipulation.
3. State the importance of assertiveness and it’s skill.
4. Highlight behaviours that improve assertiveness.
5. State factors that influence assertiveness

Previous k. students have been taught negotiation, so they can use it to connect to the topic.

CONTENT :- THE MEANING OF ASSERTIVENESS.

Assertiveness means standing up for what one wants or believes or feels. Or communicating ones
needs and feeling without violating the rights of other people,

DISTINCTION BETWEEN ASSERTIVENESS, AGGRESSIVENESS, PASSIVENESS AND MANIPULATION.

Assertiveness means speaking up for what one wants or saying how one feels. It involves communicating
ones feeling and needs without violating the rights of others.

Aggressiveness means standing up for what one wants and at the same time violating the right of others
that is, it interferes with the rights of others.

Passiveness means accepting what happens or what people do without trying to change anything or
oppose them. It means not expressing one’s feeling and needs or expressing them so weakly that they
will neither be understood nor addressed.

Manipulating involves pretending everything is alright and trying to set what you want in a deviousway.
To manipulate means to control or influence somebody/something often in a dishonest way.

Importance of Assertiveness.

1. It increases one’s self esteem


2. It gives a sense of fulfillment.
3. It can promote friendship
4. You can get what you want while earning respect.
5. You can avoid exploitation.

Assertiveness skill involves

i. Stating and repeating one’s position


ii. Stating and repeating one’s position
iii. Taking position
iv. Taking the offensive, if need be.
v. Refusing further discussion.
vi. Walking away from the scene.

Behaviours that improve assertiveness

1. Honest with yourself and others.


2. Understanding your values and other people values.
3. Having positive self-esteem
4. Speaking up for oneself.
5. Having a positive body image and use assertive body language.
6. Possessing good communicating skills.
7. Developing of refusal skill both verbal and non-verbal.
8. Setting limits and keeping to them.
9. Repeating the message.

Factors that influence assertiveness.

1. Culture:- It is a way of life , it is dynamic and always changing with new ideas that are introduced
to the society in many culture, and families, male children are preferred to female children and
this affect the female ability to be assertive.
2. Religion:- It’s teaching also effect one’s ability to be assertive because different religious
teaching use to be submissive.
3. Gender Roles:- It also limits one’s ability to be assertive if accepted because different behaviours
are considered appropriate for men and women. Women are often taught not to express
feelings or to behave in a way expected of men.
