THE PROBLEM

A. Introduction

The Corona Virus Disease (COVID – 19) had spread all over the world, including our

country, Philippines. Due to this pandemic, face-to-face engagement of students and teachers

within the school has been suspended. The Department of Education is in the process of adapting

the new normal form of education and one of these is the Modular Distance Learning (MDL).

The learning modality is currently used by all public schools.

Modular Distance Learning is the use of printed Self Learning Modules (SLF) made by the

teachers with different tasks and learning activities based from the Essential Learning

Competencies (ELC). The use of modules encourages independent study. Students engage

themselves in learning the concepts presented in the module (Nardo, MT.B, 2017). Based on the

study conducted by Ambayon (2020), modular instruction is more operative in the teaching-

learning method as equated to usual teaching approaches because in this modular approach the

students learn in their own stride.

The study includes the main challenges that the students in Grade 11 – Pythagoras have

encountered. It includes difficulty to access internet connection, lack of sleep and time to answer

all the modules, lack of gadget(s), and also lack of focus and self-discipline, students struggle

with self-studying.

As cited by (Salma and Rodrigues 2012) research, most of the students are having difficulty

in this new learning modality. In our section, many of us are having a hard time in answering the
modules and failed to submit on time, with above mentioned challenges quality education is very

much affected.

B. Statement of the Problem

This research seeks to identify the challenges of Grade 11 – Pythagoras Students in the use

of modular distance learning modality amidst pandemic.

The following will be the focus of the research:

• What are the challenges encountered by Grade 11 – Pythagoras students in the

implementation of Modular Distance Learning?

C. Significance of the Study

The study is intended to acquire reliable information and insights about the challenges

encountered by the Grade 11 – Pythagoras students in the implementation of Modular Distance

Learning using the printed self-learning modules.

The data gathered through an online questionnaire form will serve as the basis on how to

address this problem that affects the quality education in this new normal system of education.

Through this study, the DepED personnel may come up on the solutions to uplift the quality

education amidst pandemic and may help lessen students’ challenges in the implementation of

modular distance learning.

D. Objectives of the Study

The study's general objective is to examine the different challenges encountered by G11 –

Pythagoras students at public school in Opol, Misamis Oriental. Specifically, the study aims to:

1. Identify the different challenges that Grade 11 – Pythagoras has encountered in the

implementation of Modular Distance Learning.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. Research Setting

The study will be conducted in Opol National Secondary Technical School-Senior High.

B. Research Design

The research focused on the different challenges students face when implementing a
modular distance learning modality. The researchers will use a survey questionnaire through
google forms. The research design of this research proposal belongs to descriptive
quantitative research.

C. Entry Protocol

A letter will be sent to the adviser of Grade 11 – Pythagoras to inform the research project,

asking permission to conduct the study.

D. Sampling procedure

The students in Grade 11– Pythagoras challenges in implementing the modular distance

learning will be measured through online survey questionnaire form.

The purpose of the questionnaire is to find out the different challenges that the Grade 11 –

Pythagoras students have encountered in this new normal system of education implemented

by Department Of Education (DepEd) that affects the quality education of the students

amidst in this time of pandemic.

E. Ethical Issue

All the google forms surveyed of the students will kept in private, and it made a

confidentiality agreement before conducting the study.

F. Statistical Analysis

Students’ challenge towards quality education will be measured using the modified Survey

Form Questionnaire for G11 – Pythagoras. Using a Dichotomous scale, ‘YES’ or ‘No’. The

means of the respondents' responses were used to interpret the results, with corresponding

verbal interpretation, and percentage distribution will also be used. Grade 11 – Pythagoras

students at Opol National Secondary Technical School-Taboc Opol Misamis Oriental who are

willing to volunteer the survey participated in an online survey through Google forms during

the second semestre of 2022 April and May.
