PROCEDURE

ACTIVITY 1

a. Warmer
Aim:
- to get students engaged in communication;
- to prepare students for the lesson.
Skill focus: - speaking
Methods: - conversation, guessing game
Timing: 7’

This is an oral activity. Students are organized in groups and play a game of guessing and
short-answering. The teacher asks questions by using Present Perfect in order to get short
answers (Eg. Have you ever been afraid? - Yes, I have/ NO, I haven’t) and verifies some Past
simple and Past Participle forms with the students (Eg.: Past simple of ‘to bring’? - Brought.
Past participle of ‘to take’? - Taken).

ACTIVITY 2

Aim:- to introduce students into the Present Perfect practice.

Skill focus: -writing and speaking
Methods: - conversation, explanation, exercise (fill-in)
Timing: 10’

The teacher underlines the fact that in order to talk about actions that happened some
time in our life up to now we use the Present Perfect tense. A worksheet is given in this sense to
the students in which they are asked to change the verbs in parentheses into the Present perfect
form (Eg.: I …have read…..(read) your book several times). Then, the teacher checks the
answers with each group, giving points as feedback.

ACTIVITY 3

Aim:-to give students controlled practice in the use of Past simple and Past continuous
tenses (exercise II), but also of Present Perfect (exercise III).

Skill focus: - reading, listening, writing, speaking

Methods: explanation, fill-in exercise, question tag, pair-work

Timing: 18’

Exercise II. The students are given a worksheet and are asked to scan for about 1’ the
sentences that they will need to fill-in with the right tense (Past simple or Past continuous) after
watching a short part from the movie ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ (2006). Then, students watch
the video in order to fill in the text with the missing words (Eg.: Chris ……was cooking….
(cook) burgers for breakfast when his landlord …knocked………(knock) on his door.). The
teacher and the students check whether the task has been fulfilled correctly. If necessary, the
teacher plays the video again.

Exercise III. The students are given question tags in order to appropriately make agreements by
noticing the different tenses altogether (Past simple, Past Continuous and Present Perfect).

Eg.: 1. It was cold yesterday, ……wasn’t it…….?

2. He went to the party last night, …..didn’t he…..?

3. They've been to Japan, ..…...haven’t they…..?

Then, the teacher checks the results with each group, giving them points accordingly.

ACTIVITY 4

Aim:- to provide students with free practice of the target language.

Skill focus: -speaking, writing, conversation.

Methods: - creative writing, group-work, conversation.

Timing: 5’

One member from each group is asked to choose a ticket with 3 Past simple verbs. Then,
each team will have to write a short (interesting/funny) story, of maximum 4-5 sentences, in
which to use the given forms of the verbs.

ACTIVITY 5

Aims: - to check whether students can use the target language properly;

Skill focus: - listening, speaking, writing

Methods: - conversation, exercise, group-work

Timing: 10’

The students representing each group read the short stories made during Activity 4, while
the teacher checks for grammar and spelling mistakes, giving them the necessary feedback.

Eventually, the group reaching the maximum number of points is declared the winner of the
class.
