10) To know and imbibe the great ideals and principle of Rizal for which he died
2. What is the main idea of the poem which Rizal wrote when he was 18 years of old, To the Filipino Youth.
(10)
The poem “To the Filipino Youth” is a message that the youths are important, and they can contribute
to shaping the future of our motherland, The Philippines. Rizal recognizes in the first stanza that the youths are
timid and silent but still, he encourages them to hold their heads high for they possess talents and skills and
abilities that could make their country proud. The poem encourages us, youths, to be courageous in expressing
our talents and skills. Additionally, in the second stanza, he advised the youth to fill their minds will noble
thoughts and hopes. That the youth shall break free from the chains that binds them and soars high where the
joy of honor is. In the remaining stanzas, Rizal calls for the poetic genius to fill the earth with strokes of art and
science with magnificent ideas. He recognized that the youth are full of new ideas and that is indeed true.
Youths are the vessels of innovative ideas and therefore, they should not be shy in expressing their new ideas
for improvements. Additionally, he challenges the youth to stay humble even in pursuit of knowledge and
wisdom. Furthermore, he encouraged the youth to seek the beauty of poetry and music. To sum all things up,
throughout the poems of Rizal, he recognized and specified all the youths’ abilities that can contribute to the
greatness of the Filipino nation. He therefore encourages the youth, us, to help in building our motherland.

3. A La Juventud Filipina was a poem in Spanish written by a Filipina which was a classic in Philippine literature
for two reasons. What are the two reasons? Why do you think it was recognized by the Spanish authorities for
being so. (10)
A La Juventud Filipina was a classic because it was the first Spanish poem written by a Filipino and was
recognized by Spanish authority. Additionally, it is because it expressed that the Filipinos are the “fair hope of
the Fatherland” and not the Spaniards. For the reason why Spaniards recognized the poem, I believe that it was
because of the message of the poem. The poem is inspiring in which it adores and encourages the youths to
rich their potential by harnessing their skills and talents. And that they are capable of great heights. I think that
the judges during that time was captures by the beauty of the poem. I, myself, was mesmerized by how Rizal
described the youths and how he encourages them. Even if the Spaniards are cruel at that time, no one can
deny that talents are way beyond anger or cruelty.
4. The same poem was a manifestation of Rizal’s nationalism. Why do you think so? What are your reasons?
(10)
The poem A La Juventud Filipina was a showcase of nationalism of Rizal for he recognized that and
referred to that the Philippines is his home/motherland. The thought of Rizal in his poem relates to the role of
the youth in nation building. He loves his home so dear that he encourages the youth to be an influence and
contributor of it. To specify my reasons, first, when Rizal wrote this poem and the theme his fellow countrymen
specifically the youth, this is already a reference to his nationalism. Additionally, he referred in his poem that
Philippines his home/motherland. Furthermore, when he encouraged the youth through his poem, he already
expressed his love for change and strength for his country. Isn’t that nationalism? Nationalism is when you put
your country above any other things that might hindrance the development of your country. It is when you
love and care for it. Rizal has expressed it all in his poem.
5. What can you infer from the first taste of Spanish brutality experienced by Rizal? (10 pts.)
Injustice during the time of Rizal is astonishing in a bad sense. Imagine being slashed by a sword on your
back just because you didn’t salute the lieutenant. And when you complained, nothing good happened. I don’t
really know how to react. However, morally speaking, it way out bound. Cruelty and brutality are such a
despicable word during that time. I condemn their bad character. I, personally is not acceptable however,
during that time, it is already known that Spaniards are cruel to Indios. Therefore, if I’m to derive a conclusion
based on that era, that is nothing to be surprised about. There is more brutality that happened to other people
way more brutal that what Rizal experienced. In conclusion, I can therefore say that the characters of the
Spaniards are way out of league, and they are hateful. Their actions and behavior are disturbing, and Rizal must
have been so emotionally affected.

Good luck!!!
