C. Sodium Bicardonate

While Heating- while sodium bicarbonate undergoes heating it begins to breakdown into three
Compounds which is forming sodium carbonate, water and carbon dioxide.

After Heating – it formed sodium carbonate, water and carbon dioxide.

D.

1. Toluene and colored water- the toluene is insoluble in colored water

2. Colored water and acetic acid- the acetic acid is soluble in colored water

3. Toluene and colored water,

And Colored water and acetic acid- the toluene in a colored water is insoluble while the
acetic acid in a colored water is soluble.

DISCUSSION OF RESULTS:
Based on your observation, classify each of the following substance as element, compound,
homogeneous mixture or heterogeneous mixture, justify your answer.

1. Sulfur- sulfur is an element because it is belong in the periodic table.

2. Iron filling- an element because it is a pure substance

3. Sulfur iron and Filling combined

A. Not heated- it is heterogeneous mixture because sulfur is powder and iron is a metal so they
can be separated if they were mixed

B. Heated- it is compound because if they were heated it formed compound which is iron
sulfide

4. Sodium bicarbonate- A compound because sodium bicarbonate is composed of four

element which is sodium, hydrogen, carbon and oxygen.

5. Toluene and colored water- an heterogeneous mixture because toluene is insoluble in a

colored water

6. Colored water and acetic acid- an homogenous mixture because the acetic acid is
soluble in colored water

7. Toluene, colored water,

And Colored water and acetic acid- and heterogeneous and homogenous mixture
because toluene is insoluble in a colored water while acetic acid is.
QUESTIONS:

1. When element combined to form compound, are the properties of the element retained
in the compound? Give an example and illustrate your answer.

- No, for example: Sulfur and iron filling if they were combined it formed a compound which is
iron sulphide. when element combine to form compounds, there are chemical reaction that
occurs which formed chemical properties

2. Differentiate between

a. And element and a compound- An element is a pure chemical substance made of same type of
atom while a compound contains atoms of different elements chemically combined together in a
fixed ratio.

b. A compound and a mixture - Compound are substances which can be formed by chemically
combining two or more elements. Mixtures are substances that are formed by physically
mixing two or more substances.

3. A substance x is solid at 25oC. When heated to absolute to 250oC it gradually liquefied.

When cooled back at 25oC the liquid could not be induce to solidify. Is substance x
probably an element, a compound or a mixture? Explain your answer.

- When cooled, it solidifies in liquid form at a fixed temperature, which would be the same
temperature at which it melts when heated. It must be a mixture if the material does not
solidify all at the same temperature.
