• Eva : Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing very well.
Let's start with you, Silkie Carlo, you are the director of Big Brother,
you are also an activist against this new technology.
• Eva : Good, now the famous British journalist who has been an
author specialized in cyber security Alan Pearce.
• Suraiya : Hello, thank you for having invited me to tonight’s debate.
• Eva : You're welcome, to finished in order to have an exterior opinion
there is an American citizen who will represent the point of view of the
American people.
• Maryam : Hi, I'm Maryam and I'm a legal American citizen who has
lived in New York for at least 15 years and has witnessed
changes in crime management and security.
• Eva : Thank you all to be here now we should start the debate :
What do you think about modern technologies to fight crime ? Let's
hear you first, Mr Shea.
• Marjolaine : Indeed, I use a lot of technology, so I have been able to
test récent technologies that fight crime like Ring, LFR…
And I know it would reduce crime in our modern society.
• Rachima : ( dit qu’on est surveillé et que t’es pas d’accord)
• Maryam : For me the ring is important, because it helps the police to
find the criminals as quickly as possible.
Marjolaine : However, increasing security by monitoring thé population may
help to limit crimes.
Eva : Very interesting. What is your take on security, Mr Pearce?
• Suraiya : It's very interesting to hear your different points of view. I
think you all have made good points. I am gonna put some nuances
to what you have said. whereas it’s undeniable that cyber security
and digital counter surveillance help police a lot, as Mr Shea
suggests, they can also be very dangerous for public security. To give
just one example, we should think about the man who was shot by a
drone that functioned autonomously thanks to facial recognition
technology. Or about China's social credit system based on the
surveilance of its citizens via facial recognition.
• Eva : Thank you, this makes for a great transition. How does facial
récognition have an impact on your job, Mr Shea, how does it help
you on a daily basis? Could you give us an example ?
• Maryam : I find that the LFR is a bad thing, because there is a day I
agree when I was walking and there is a policeman who stopped me
because I had put a scarf and a hat while it was cold, so it is not
practical.
•
Eva : I see that this problem is more recurring than expected. What
should we do to fix it?
• Suraiya: This, like the drone example I gave a while ago, is exactly
the kind of thing that should never have happened, and what's most
worrisome about this technologies. The question we must ask
ourselves is: is the feeling of the security that a technology such as
facial recognition brings to society as a whole as important as the
personal security and freedom of the innocent citizens? We should
ask whether we value security over freedom or the other way around.
• Rachima : How can we impose this on innocent citizens. People have
changed, we are constantly under surveillance in the streets even
though we are innocent. Where is the freedom of this country?`
• Marjolaine: I agree, I agree, but sometimes, you had to put pressure
on people to make him more obédient.
• Eva : Do you find that the police exceed certain limits even if it
concerns their work or their duties ? Should they have less power
than they currently have ?
• Rachima : Of course the police has imposed a control in our life.
maybe there are people who don't want us to know their personal
information and Imagine that you have lost personal information, what
are you going to do?nothing because it will already be too late
• Marjolaine: Insecurity has been more and more présent, so it’s the
only solution we found.
Since that, security is more and more présent by this practice.
Eva: qu’est ce que vous en pensez de la technologie en général ?
• Maryam : technology has started to take over the world. Everyone
always has a smartphone or smart device glued to their hand,
understanding technology has become a must in the professional
field, and even school is asking students to use ebooks and devices
to have a "free paper." Technology may seem like a huge
advancement for society, but with great advancement, there are also
great setbacks.
•
• Marjolaine: I think technology is so effective that we necessarily need
to use it
•
• Maryam : We now live in an era of social media. Everyone needs to
be connected whether it's to friends and family or to information, and
social media provides all of that. With social media, we have never
been as connected as we are now. Everyone around us can be
reached instantly with just one click. Efficiency. The use of technology
has made our lives incredibly efficient. Machines now build products
at faster speeds, programs can help organize and maintain many
aspects of life, and even people can generally type faster than they
can write.
•
• Marjolaine: We like speed, we are impatient people, it's not a secret.
•
• Maryam : Yess but for example , Social networks not only help us
stay connected, but also prevent us from seeing each other face to
face. The advantage of having access to everyone at our fingertips
forces us to stop meeting in person. But no matter how easy social
networks are, they will never take care of the need for social
interaction in real life. But the worst part is the addiction.
•
• Marjolaine: Yes, but it can help us to interact with people on thé other
side of thé earth too. For example, thé famille who live far away, we
can see them thanks to the phone, or even thé people who are sick in
hospital, it’s immediately easier to reach them.
•
• Eva: Is there anything you'd like to add, Mr Carlo, Mr Pearce?
Suraiya: As this debate has made clear, there are almost as positive
aspects to technology as there are negative ones. Even if everything Mr
Shea has pointed out is undoubtedly true from his point of view, I think
one of the upshots of this discussion is that common citizens might
nonetheless feel threatened by it. The only thing I would like to point out
before we say goodbye to each other tonight is that there a great many
uses to technology we haven't talked about which might be put to the
service of the common good, such as big data used for research on
climate change, biodiversity or the medical sciences. But I guess these
are topics for another debate.
•
• Eva : Thank you all for participating in this discussion. We can
understand that the opinions are mixed, arguments have been as for
as against because freedom is less present than the evolution of
technology on which we are dependent on this ubiquitous and useful
technology but how much this technology may make us addicted?
Thank you all for following the show, do not hesitate to send us your
next topics on which we could debate, see you soon.
