Grade 8 Science
CHAPTER 5: All about Earthquakes and Faults

September 5, 2018
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end this lesson, the students are expected to:
a. describe how faults move;
b. differentiate the footwall from the hanging wall in a fault;
c. classify faults according to their movement
d. relate the existence of faults to the occurrence of earthquakes
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. TOPIC: Earthquakes and Faults
Subtopic: Faults
B. REFERENCES:
 Science for the 21st Century learners
 Discover Science by Diwa
 Breaking Through Science by Baguio, Bonifacio, Manosa, and Santisteban
 Exploring life through Science by Pavico et al.
 Science Links Grade 8 by Madriaga, Valdoz, Aquino, and Castillo

C. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:
 visual aids, laptop, powerpoint presentation.
D. KEY TERMS/KEY IDEAS:
 Fault: is a fracture or break in Earth’s crust where earthquakes are most
likely to occur repeatedly.
 Normal fault: is a dip slip fault where a block that sites on a fault plane,
called the hanging wall, slips downward with respect to the footwall along
the dip angle.
 Reverse fault: where the block of the earth’s crust pushes upward and
along the dip angle. Thrust faults are a type of reverse fault where the
angle of the dip is 45% or less.
 Dip-slip fault: refers to the movement of faults along the angle of the
faults plane. The angle of movement is called the dip while the movement
is the slip.
 Strike-slip fault: In a strike-slip faults, nearly vertical faults planes or
surface slide in parallel but opposite direction.
E. VALUING:

How do you relate the existence of faults to the occurrence of earthquakes?

F. TEACHING STRATEGIES:
 Cooperative learning, brainstorming, guided inquiry and inductive
approach.
G. SKILLS TO BE DEVELOPED:
 Comparing and contrasting, explaining, enumerating and identifying.
III. LESSON PROPER
A. ROUTINE
1. Customary Greetings
2. Sitting arrangement
3. Attendance checking
B. REVIEW/DRILL
1. Letting the students do the activity “Show Me Board” to check what they have
learned during their past lesson.
C. MOTIVATION
Teacher will show sets of picture to students.
The teacher will let the students describe what is in the picture.

D. LESSON DEVELOPMENT
1. The teacher shall give the instructions and the following guide questions to the
students. The teacher will let the students use their science book to find and
answer the given questions below.
What is fault?
How do faults being classified? Give the two classification of faults.
Describe each types of faults according to their movement.
2. Collecting of ideas or short discussion based on the student’s answers using
the above guide questions.
E. GENERALIZATION (5 minute-Reporting)
This time, to sum up the discussion about faults and the different types of faults
according to movements, the teacher will let the students go to their respective
group and do the activity “5-minute reporting”.
In this activity, the students will have to report in front what they have learned on
their lesson in the form of semi broadcasting.

F. APPLICATION/VALUING
How do you relate the existence of faults to the occurrence of earthquakes?
IV. EVALUATION
This time, students will answer the following questions on their quiz notebook.

1. Differentiate footwall from hanging wall.

Give a short description for each types of faults according to movements.
2-3. Dip-Slip fault
4-5. Strike-Slip fault
6-7. Normal fault
8-9. Reverse fault
10. Describe what is fault?
1. ASSIGNMENT
